Unfortunately, I haven't seen a Tigers game in about a month, so I don't really know what Q. Berry looks like. His seems to be producing reasonably well in a small sample, but I don't know if he can sustain it. I guess my question is, is he a good defensive outfielder, and if so, do you you think he should play one of the corners next to Jackson and Dirks and then Boesch and Young can fight for DH at bats?

If you do think he warrants playing time when Jackson returns, would you bat him ninth, or maybe keep him at 1 and let Jackson hit 6th. Austin was swinging a powerful bat and could be a good boost to what has become an atrocious bottom third.

And you absolutely do not move Jackson down to 6th to keep Berry leadoff.

Berry will probably be kept on the team, but he'll come off the bench.

Jackson will go back to leadoff.

I would keep Berry in the leadoff and possibly put Jackson in the 5th or 6th spot and see how that goes. That speed is a problem for anyone when Berry gets on. Jackson seems hesitant to steal 2nd. I would also then move Berry to LF, Dirks to RF, and Brandon to DH.

Inge is in Oakland. ;)

Speed is more valuable lower in the order than at the top.

I like this kid, must admit I don't know much about him... but if he can keep up the hitting and getting on base..... who knows, Pedal Boesch and have him and Dirks on the corners w/Jackson in CF,sure does add a lot of speed in the outfield.

Ride him till he cools off.... To bad he can't play second!!

Bob, you read my mind. I really like what I have seen out of Berry but you don't bump him to a corner OF position, which is supposed to be a power producing spot. This is exactly the kind of guy we need in the line-up, along with Ajax. Speed is only good if it gets on base but it puts a lot of pressure on the defense. I've said this before but we have a great softball team not necessarily a great baseball team. The lack of speed attributes greatly to why we leave so many runners on-base.

Yup. I don't care if he turns into Chris Shelton. If that's the case use him while you can and then if he turns back into a pumpkin, so what? He can helps us now and that's what matters.

I love what I've seen so far, ride him until he cools off, with any luck he might be able to give us a few hot weeks and then be a good depth guy off the bench.

He's doing well, but you guys are getting way too excited, way to soon.

Let's see if he can be a major league guy at the plate, he's got a good average after 20 whole PA's mostly because of 2 huge mistakes by the Twins, a bunt he turned into a double and a hit today that should have been an out, those 2 plays fielded correctly and he's hitting .176, and not .294

He was only hitting .270 in Toledo (.249 career AAA), so he's likely to regress below that once he faces any decent pitching.

I like his speed and defense, but lets not go all Chris Shelton here.

Like I said, I haven't seen him play. I've looked at his minor league numbers, and there is nothing to suggest he will keep this up, but you never know. He just adds an extra element of speed. If he is god defensively, I prefer him as the 4th outfielder at least b/c the rest of the team with few exceptions is very mediocre on defense.

I know this, I'd feel a heck of a lot better with Berry pinch running in the 8th and then taking over one of the OF positions than I would any other option we have right now. We pinch run Laird and use Ryan Raburn as a defensive replacement in the OF right now.

Huh, he's hitting .381 and without those 2 hits he'd still be at .285. His .458 OB% is a good sign. I don't think anyone expects him to keep it up, but he's been a good spark and who knows, he could be one of those players that just gets it once he hits the Bigs and has a productive career. His speed and fielding is exactly what we need as long as he can continue to get on base.

You make some good points. I don't expect that he would keep this type of performance up through a complete season but I like that he adds an element that we don't have. Ajax is fast but not a very good base stealer...yet. I also like that Berry bats LH and can bunt for a 1B. All I am saying is that we need a player with his skill set in this line-up....and it would be great if it was at 2B.
