Once again, the debate about whether or not the Detroit Tigers should create their own Hall of Fame has been renewed with the report that the Minnesota Twins have just inducted 3 more members of their organization, including Ron Gardenhire.
In MLB, there are 18 teams that have their own Hall of Fame, including all of the oldest teams. And most of these teams have also retired the numbers of their most well-known players even though they aren?t in Cooperstown.
The Tigers are the only remaining original team without their own Hall. As well, other than Willie Horton?s jersey number, only those players in Cooperstown have theirs taken out of circulation.
While there are many great Tiger players we?d like to see in the Hall of Fame, only 1 is unquestionably deserving of the honor. Lou Whitaker.
Other organizations present binders and video to those who hold voting rights for new members. The Tigers do not. Which is why establishing their own Hall or museum and including Sweet Lou in it would serve as a gentle reminder to those in Cooperstown.
The Modern Era Committee will start meetings this year as they prepare a list of new candidates to be voted on in 2023.
Should the Tigers finally establish their own Hall of Fame or museum?
Consider the feasibility and costs associated with such a move. Prices that will undoubtedly be passed along to the fans. Also think about where this shrine could be placed.
Would you also pay an admittance fee?
On the other hand, should only the truly great Tigers be recognized by Cooperstown? Would including other popular players in a Tigers-only Hall diminish the fame of the truly historic players?
Should the Tigers recognize more players or keep the list highly exclusive?
And what about a strategy to determine who gets recognized in Detroit? Where does the team draw the line?
