Bigger Disgrace to Baseball?

I have to say I was greatly disappointed in the actions of some teams/players Wednesday. The love for the game and a competitive spirit to win seems lost on this era. I hope the baseball gods took notice.

Black Sox scandal... So I will give Pete a vote... He seems like a scum bag anyway...

Its all about getting ready for the playoffs before playing your stud ballplayers game 162. Teams that got screwed because of it should have won games earlier.

Why does some teams like Houston, Baltimore and the Phillies care about winning over other teams like the Angels and Yankees that don't care tonight. If the Yankees play hard and just half the regulars Tampa Bay is done... If the Angels tried in all three games not zero the Tigers may have home field.. I find the whole dynamic pretty interesting... I mean I am pissed but not that pissed... Still to see teams tank at the end was disconcerting..

I can understand getting ready for the playoffs and I can even excuse the yanks for tanking to avoid having to possibly face Boston in the championship. However, when teams like the Angels who have no reason to rest their starters since this is the last game, I feel that its disrespectful to the game and its past players. The integrity of the game has a lot to do with why it's America's Pastime.

I intentionally omitted the Black Sox since I think that takes the cake. haha Not sure why Pete has to suffer for their actions though? ;)

Jose Reyes is not a winner, and only cares about stats. Let him finish his career on a irrelevant losing squad for all I care. As for the Angels, it is disappointing that they played scrubs and minor leaguers. It could be said that Scoscia did it as payback for the Weaver-Guillen humiliation earlier in the year. But, Leyland responded by saying he would have done the same thing had the roles been reversed, and that takes away some of the sting. It's possible Skip was trying to cover for a fellow colleague, as he has done before. I mean what is he gonna say? "F-ing horseshit move"? Still, it does diminish the purity of the game just a little.

I voted steroid scandal. Who knows what would have happened..had there been testing done all along, and suspensions/bans handed down, There may have been other teams and players who didn't roid with Division/Pennant/WS championships and rings.

After what happened last night, I am now happy that the Tigers will face off on the road vs the Yanx. The Rays are coming into the postseason with a lot of emotion, enthusiasm, and karma on their side. The Rangers are going to have their mitts full vs this Tampa Bay team, HFA or not, IMO.

Yankees didn't owe anyone shit..they got out to a 7-0 lead and blew it. End of story. They played tough that game and took out starters as the game went on. If Jeter pulls a hammy running out a grounder in the 9th inning of that game, Girardi looks like an idiot. Hell they played Tex and he got them that big lead. They could have just rested everyone last night. They played Montero and he left the game hurt. The yankees played EXACTLY how they should have with nothing on the line. They didn't lay down but they were smart about it. I have ZERO problem with the way any of the baseball was played yesterday other than thinking Reyes was a bit of a bitch for asking to be taken out. I don't blame Reyes though, Braun had an opportunity to win the title last night and he came up empty..his fault.

Btw I voted Roids...it changes the way we look at a complete era of baseball and makes some of the leagues most legendary players cheaters. Only sport I can think of that has that darkness to it.

Are you really comparing steroids and gambling to what happened yesterday?

Wow.

Right..I'm with Mitch on this one. You can't collapse and then expect your arch rival to bail you out. Beat the fucking Orioles a few times if you want to make it to the playoffs with the 3 other best teams in the league.

Jose Reyes is funny. He did what most players have done through history. There are a surprising number of examples of guys taking themselves out. One of those less than impressive baseball traditions.

I don't blame the Yankees at all. Why should they risk getting anyone hurt to help a Red Sox team that didn't deserve to get in with their awful September play??? And I hate the Yankees!

besides the Tigers having Todd Jones as a closer his last 2 years, the biggest disgrace is ROIDS.

I think it would be a toss-up between steroids and the Black Sox scandal.

Even omitting the recent bias in favor of saying "steroids" the fact that in both cases, the leagues had to resort to external legal/legislative action to cure the fallout speaks volumes.

The bright side is that the Black Sox scandal at least introduced America to a guy with a great name: Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis. steroids did no such thing...

I don't know why the Black Sox scandal would be omitted from the poll... the OP needs to re-think his approach.

The Black Sox Scandal is the biggest disgrace to baseball. Anytime a game is thrown, it's impossible to top. Sports can only survive if they're on the up and up. You don't agree, look at what's happened to boxing.

Ha, ha...I'm sure every Angel hitter who went to the plate last night was thinking to himself "I'm gonna whiff here to avenge Jered Weaver for what happened in Detroit..."

and as Weaver was about to serve up the jack to Napoli he was thinking "I'm going to give up any chance of leading the league in ERA just to get back at the Tigers for what happened in Detroit."

Likewise I'm sure Gerardi, with the Yankees holding a seven run lead, instructed his team "hey, let's go ahead and intentionally lose here, just so we can fuck over the Red Sox..."

That was explained above. The Black Sox is an obvious #1. Perhaps I should have included the HGH problem as a singular event as are the others. Better choice would have been, "Bonds uses HGH to become single season HR leader"

Disrespectful? And past players? You sound like this new to sports and new to baseball. Its been going on for years, and decades and more decades. And what about the Yankees, they were up 7-0. And the BP who blew it were regular BP guys.

And maybe the Angels thought Weaver had pitched enough this season. I notice Cleveland didn't put up much of a fight. They threw rookie pitcjers out there. If you get upset with Yanks or Angels, then Clev is in same boat.
