Bill Connelly has Michigan #5 in a new resume metric

I do not think it is appropriate to just compare Harbaugh to the utter trash that came before him and use that as his measuring stick. Michigan had nowhere to go but up when he was brought on board.

Michigan was basically dogshit under RichRod and Hoke. I don't think anyone disagrees with that nor forgets it. Harbaugh has come in and made things better absolutely, but not to the level where we should just be happy and satisfied. Is that all it takes to make us happy? Beat the mediocre teams please and I'll be fine? Don't worry about losing to OSU and MSU those guys are tough!

Michigan football should be competing with and beating the best teams in the country whether at home or on the road. This team has a chance to do so. There's nothing wrong with being sour that Harbaugh has not as of yet brought us to that level. That is exactly what he was brought here to do. He was not brought here to make us "not struggle" with lesser opponents. That should have been a given for whomever the new coach was. He was brought here to win championships, and if you believe otherwise I don't know what to tell you.

We will see how the rest of the season goes. Things could go very well it remains to be seen. I do like how much better they looked last week for sure. Gotta take that level of play on the road now.

I don't think anyone's happy and satisfied. We're close and making progress. On the right track. Not where we want to be, but getting there.

Agreed. We are all just waiting for that next step. They have a chance to do it this season.

When Harbaugh was first hired, one of the things I read was that he loved o-line shifting before the snap. It was a complicated thing to each and wouldn't happen in the first year. Between that not happening and Pep Hamilton being the QB coach, is it fair to suspect Harbaugh is something of a figurehead coach, not getting into the one-on-one coaching as much as he did at Stanford?

Nope, not satisfied either. Of course, I want Michigan to win more

The program going up was no given. If Rich Rod has taught you or anyone anything, there is no guarantee that things will get better. Things could've gotten worse!

It was the closest thing to a given that there can be in my opinion. Look at Hoke's last year. 5-7 and didn't beat one team worth a damn (unless you count a 2-6 in Big Ten play Penn State team). Losing to Maryland and Rutgers among others. We were just plain awful.

You can say "well 3-9 would have been worse," but to me it's negligible. Both types of results are shit and a waste of a season by any respectable standard. When RichRod took over I was actually sad to see Carr go, and didn't think the program was in that bad of shape. He was one year removed from damn near winning a national championship if we don't lose that OSU toss up game #1 vs #2. Different circumstances, different times.

At any rate Harbaugh was NOT going to go 3-9 or something like that, so to me yes that was pretty much a given. Michigan is going to get 3 or 4 wins every single year on talent alone and just showing up.

All that to say, I don't want Harbaugh gone or something nutty like that. I just don't like comparing him to RichRod and Hoke because they sucked major amounts of butt. That shouldn't be the standard of comparison is all I'm saying.

Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned them. The point I was trying to make was that there's more to it that just the scores. Sometimes if you argue about close scores people will point out that there were a couple close scores under Hoke even though the teams weren't close to the same level of play. Now, I think we are close. 2016 we played right at their level. They didn't have a bad game or anything. You can't tell that from the scoreboard or the series record vs rivals or whatever.

OK, how about we compare them with Florida ST, Florida, Nebraska, Texas, and some other power schools? Oh wait. they all suck this year. Nevermind. How about we just quit comparing them to anyone?

Would be fine by me if we didn't pat ourselves on the back for being better than schools that currently suck sure. I don't see what they have to do with what I said, as I was just specifically talking about RichRod and Hoke. That is who I see Harbaugh predominantly getting compared to when I discuss the team with fans nowadays. When he was first brought on board we used to compare him to Urban Meyer, Nick Saban etc. Funny how that tune has changed a bit.

Okay, so as long as nobody here pats themselves or other Michigan fans on the back, you're good.

I?m patting myself on the back for this very high ranking from this dude that I have never heard of before.

Now see, this is the very problem UMRules06 is trying to address.

you might think his username is "UMRules..." because he thinks UM rules.

But it's actually "rules" as in "school rules." He makes the rules for UM fans on the message board.

As to follow the new rules, I will not be happy about anything this Saturday. If Michigan scores, it will not make me happy. If Michigan gets a tackle, then it will not make me happy. If Michigan wins, it will not make me happy.

We aren't allowed to be happy about anything until at least 10/13 when/if Michigan does something against UW, because they are a good team, even though they aren't a rival.

Really, though, we aren't allowed to be happy about anything until maybe 10/20 and then it is only if Michigan does something good against MSU.

Is the new rule to not be happy until those days? Or is it just to not be overly self congratulatory...

The rule seems somewhat ambiguous to me.

Anyway, I'm going to ignore the rule.

I'm going to be a maverick.

I'm going to be a rebel.

Lol you guys get so uppity over nothing. Sure we can be happy in a short term sense when they win. I'm talking big picture satisfied with where the program is. I thought that was pretty clear, and I'm sure you guys all knew that and are choosing to turn this into something it's not. I also said repeatedly that I believe they can have a special year this year. I'm not taking a dump on the team or coach whatsoever.

And no I'm not assigning rules for anybody. Merely stating my opinion. Carry on folks. Go Blue.

I laugh at Bill Maher's new rules every week.

But I don't follow them.

I thought you were the one getting uppity.

Anyway, I still look at this as year 2 of Harbaugh. I know that is against conventional wisdom, but the first 2 seasons with Harbaugh as coach were transition years, would've been that way with any new coach, yet Harbaugh still got the team to 10 wins both years. Last year, I look at as year #1, hence the step back and 8-5 record (notice 8-5 is not horrible, it is not 3-9 or 5-7, etc). Last year, Harbaugh's first real recruiting class were sophomores. This season, his first real recruiting class are juniors and you can see a big difference.

I don't think anyone is satisfied on the team, in the program, or as fans of the program, yet I can see that definite progress has been made.

They looked like a completely different team then the one that played and alomost beat 3-0 Colorado. I guess having the #1 qb hurt is something.

CU is an average P12 team with two really exciting players from DeSoto HS (where Von Miller went). NU is pretty bad but as I posted weeks ago after the CU game, they?re a one trick pony - all Martinez. The CU Defense isn?t very good and beating CSU, Nebraska and New Hampshire isn?t very impressive. Tonight vs UCLA should be telling.

And Penn St barely (luckily) beat App State and it?s hard to argue M isn?t better than PSU, despite the one loss to noter dame sucks on the road in week one.

That's all fair, and I really don't disagree with much of that. I didn't think what I was saying was really all that outrageous, but I understand things are open to interpretation. It was not my intention to start some sort of "harbaugh sucks" line of conversation because he doesn't. Nor was it my intention to tell others how to act or feel. That's not the type of person I am at all.

I just think he's so much better than Hoke or RichRod that to compare him to them is sort of meaningless that's all. Like it devalues him in some way.
We've definitely made progress in the right direction absolutely. I know how much better we look game to game than we did under the previous regimes. It's quite obvious in fact.

I think the program is in great shape and headed in the right direction.

The depth and talent is vastly better than it’s been in a decade and we will be back to 10-win seasons on the regular in coming years.
