Boy that Jim Leyland sure is an idiot..

I don't think anyone here is a JL cheerleader..just tired of EVERYTIME 1 thing doesnt work, seeing all of the bashing. Its ridiculous. Also, if managers dont matter, then why not just have the GM write up a line up each night, send it down and call in subs. Players can take care of the rest. Seems silly to spend millions on something that a child could do at a professional level.

So he gets payed to hand in the lineup card and to tell Velverde its his turn. I guess you got the answer you were looking for.

See my post above...guess we should just have the gm's be managers.

Here is how it goes:

Santiago bats 2nd and has a good game = RAMON IS AWESOME! SIGN HIM UP FOR NEXT YEAR

Santiago bats 2nd and has a bad game = LEYLAND IS A MORON! FIRE HIS ASS!

Without fail.

JL haters just like to bitch.....but they don't like to put the blame on their "hero" players. I've said from day one that managers don't have a huge impact on the outcome of games based on their in-game decisions or their lineups. But, in the long run, those choices do help the team out. Giving guys like Santiago & Kelly innings in the regular season goes a long way in how they develop and their confidence come crunch time. Those are the little things that make him a good manager....it's not the in-game things....it is how he manages his ball club over the long haul.

Very well said.

Part of that is the fact our hero players as you put them, Miggy Mart Peralta Avila etc have played well most of the year. They've earner their way to not be criticized. But guys like Raburn, Inge and the like have failed way more than succeeded. And I don't see Santiago as Ihbe put it, getting blame for much. He's a utility player. He's not expected to get 4 hits a game and save the game.

The point is that when Leyland puts a player in an odd place in the lineup (like Kelly tonight batting 6th), people tend to either credit that player when he performs well or blame Leyland if he fails.

But thankfully Leyland really doesn't give a flying fuck about what the fans think. And I love him for it.

Well personally I wanted Raburn GONE by the all star break..Leyland stuck with him and he caught fire. Stuff like that goes unnoticed..any of us would have DFA'd him and rolled with some other bum that cant get on base in his place but Leyland stuck it out and it payed off.

Leyland is neither horrible or a great manager.

He does a lot of dumb things, and often gets picked apart by the fans and media for it.

He also gets little credit when things go well.

one of my big problems with Leyland is he is loyal to a fault, and it's a big fault.

Fire Rick Knapp, but not McClendon or Lamont, both of whom are doing terrible jobs, and have been for a while.

Get upset that people wanted Don Kelly to start at 3rd base after Inge came back from Mono...forget that Kelly was playing fantastic defense and producing much more then Inge did.

Refused to move Maggs to the back of the order, to take pressure off him.

Smokey get this team to the postseason, and I give him credit for it.

But most of the credit goes to DD, and the talent he handed Leyland, 5 allstars and a couple who could have been (VMart, Boesch).

It doesn't take genius level to know Raburn is a one half player. I'm certainly not going to credit him for playing a guy 4 months while batting .220 and striking out at a huge pace.

A guy who's bad defense also costs us a handful of games probably.

He sucked for two months, but whatever

This is the thing about Inge - if he gets enough at bats, eventually he'll get a hit in a key situation.

Bam, game over. I'm sure JL went up to Inge and said "You've sucked and haven't done jack all season, this might be it. You're due.". Or something to that effect.

Ha, ha...

Maybe it went something like that.

He did have a walkoff home run one time, didn't he?

So he's up to twice for the season now.
