I'm not going chicken little over a few bad games, but he's not being put in the position where he's been most successful historically. Here are his career batting numbers at each spot in the lineup...

Probably nothing, but the hitting second thing is something I noticed last year. No clue who else would make sense in the 2 hole though.

I think you have to figure when he was batting 3, it was in front of Miggy. He's still in front of Miggy. He'll be fine.

Doesn't explain why he was so much better 5th than 2nd. It's just a shame they don't have anyone to hit there, Boesch seems like the prototypical 5th hitter to me.

And of course these aren't the biggest sample sizes, just something I noticed.

The numbers you posted says he was best at 3, IN FRONT OF MIGGY. Its not about 3 or 5 or 2, its about being in front of Miguel.

Stop looking at the numbers of somebody based on where they hit in a lineup, those numbers don't mean shit.

Does fangraphs have a stat for Boesch's AVG and OBP in....
1) pitcher full windup
2) pitcher stretch-mode

Just curious! Brennan is NOT the most patient hitter with men-on-base. Jackson's OBP is .625 so far.

He was only slightly better batting 3rd than 5th. .849 vs .810 OPS. He has a .612 OPS batting 2nd.

Negligible difference, but he's better with men on.

They have splits for his stats with men on base, and the bases empty, yes.

And Boesh walks more and strikes out less when there are men on base.

But when they moved him to 2, he had the likes of a down trodden Maggs, or Worth/Kelly batting behind him. At 5, he had a nice bat behind him as well but if they moved him to 5 now, they'd probably just move DY to 6.

BB is still inexperienced enough and inconsistent enough to hold his own. He needs a good bat behind him.

How large is the sample size for any of these?

It's small. I already acknowledged that.

How do you think Boesch views himself? As a guy who's supposed to get on base, or as a guy that's supposed to knock in runs? I'm fairly certain it's the latter. Isn't there a chance that putting him in a lineup position where getting on base trumps knocking in runs could possibly alter his approach? I'm sure Leyland is telling him all the right things, but there's no way Boesch isn't putting some focus on trying to get on base for the big guys behind him. If he's successful in doing that, great, but in general any time you're putting something into your mindset at the plate that deviates from your comfort zone, it's a bad thing.

Fair point, we'll see how this season goes.

By getting on base more he would also be driving in more runs.

Problem solved, all he needs to do is continue doing what he did last year.

Lets hope he does. If so, and he does match his .341 OBP that would be sweet.
