This was a schoolyard debate. Thought about it again when I watched Baseball Seasons: 1980. On the playground, there was a definite split. Who was better in 1980?

Mitch[/color]]Schmidt.

Same, I was thinking for career, in which case Brett has no argument for being over Schmidt.

In 1980, I'd give it to Brett.

Btw, those baseball seasons shows, I watched 1977 the other day, are sweet.

They really are. They had 1987 on today. I DVR them.

and yes it's 1980 Brett vs. 1980 Schmidt.

I DVD a lot of shit I should DVD these.

not only is the vote close for this 1980 season, they are arguably the 2 best all time, flip a coin. with Mathews maybe a hair or two behind them, and Boggs, Chipper...

Yeah, I'd say that's the top 5. Schmidt, Brett, and Mathews in the top tier.

I don't know who "George Brett" is. But when my mother listened to Tigers games in the late 70s and early 80s she'd slam dishes and snap and snarl about "That Goddam Brett." Is he the same guy?

She must have been talking about his brother, Ken.

MLBNetwork

I just got my Baseball Digest...in 1980, Brett won Player of the Year over Schmidt.

Typically a hitters award, JV was the 2nd pitcher to achieve it.

Brett killed alot of teams. Scroll down if the direct link doesn't work.
vs. Tigers .307/.378/.526/.904

I give Schmidt the edge due to defense, power numbers, and more importantly games played... hard to underestimate how important actually being on the field is to you team lol

I bet Schmidt couldn't run out of the dugout with arms flailing like a mad man :)
