I just got my Baseball Digest...in 1980, Brett won Player of the Year over Schmidt.

Typically a hitters award, JV was the 2nd pitcher to achieve it.

Ryan Braun won it for 2011.

Not for Baseball Digest. They separate the two. I am looking right at the cover. BRaun was player of the year and JV pitcher.

The one that was at one time Sporting news, maybe its still called that. But it showed player of the year, JV.
