Broyles cut

They traded for Norwood, so they're "set"? If that's what you call set.

Point is, they won't juggle an already fragile core anymore this late in the preseason. Their receivers suck, but they needs guys who know the scheme. No time to teach a never-was.

Norwood? I still see him landing on a roster down the road.

Pretty spot on article:

Ryan Broyles joins Lions’ long list of failures:

"...It’s important remembering that this latest chapter of second-round futility isn’t Broyles’ fault. It’s all on general manager Martin Mayhew.

This wasn’t a popular pick when he made it three years ago. Broyles suffered a torn-up knee in his final year at Oklahoma, but the Lions were certain they could develop a quality receiver worthy of being selected much higher than 54th overall. The rationale from Mayhew then was that Broyles was a first-round pick lingering in the second round because of concerns regarding his physical state.

It further reinforced the argument that the Lions remained obsessed with amassing offensive artillery, surrounding the franchise quarterback of their choosing — Matthew Stafford — with as much weaponry as possible to justify the commitment they made in Stafford."

Lions’ Round 2 picks from the past 12 drafts:

Hits: CB Darius Slay (2013),
S Louis Delmas (2009), QB Drew Stanton (2007).

Misses: WR Ryan Broyles (2012), WR Titus Young (2011), RB Mikel Leshoure (2011), LB Jordon Dizon (2008), DE Ikaika
Alama-Francis (2007), S Gerald Alexander (2007), S Daniel Bullocks (2006), DT Shaun Cody (2005), LB Teddy Lehman (2004).

Incomplete: LB Kyle Van Noy (2014), RB Ameer Abdullah (2015).

Not sure I'd put Stanton in the hits department. I'm sure we all agree he went way to high plus he only started 4 games here and wasn't very good.

In-fact, I'd say he was down right terrible.

I thought putting Stanton on the hit list was a reach. However, he is one of the few players in the group that is still in the league. Sadly he probably is currently our third best second rounder over the period.

Every single one of those players had injury issues other than Slay in 2014. And many of those listed are Millen picks too.

Lions have a second round injury curse. I hope Slay avoids it like last year.

Burleson was old and had his cap number rising in 2012 and 2013 (he took a pay cut to stay). Broyles was a smart pick but then got hurt.

Thompson had Jordy and Cobb and took Davante Adams and Ty Montogmery recently. Yes you stockpile WRs.

It's smart to have as many weapons as possible. Those weapons must work and stay healthy. Lions didn't get the healthy part which is bad luck.

Three WRS typcially play alot. So you need 4 in case of an injury.

And with Calvin, Tate, Ebron and Moore, Broyles can go.

When Young goes insane in the offseason and Burleson/Broyles get hurt, you end up with alot of Kris Durham like 2013.

And yes he stockpiled WRS but he also stockpiled the defense quite well. Top 5 defense built by Mayhew

Who cares, the point is this team has had a failure of second rounders for over a decade. It is one of the reasons the LIons have had such little success over the years.

Drafting a slow undersized WR with injury history that is dropping because of injury concern is not bad luck when you draft him and he becomes injury. It's gambling.

If you walk into a casino and go up to a roulette table and put all your money on #12 and it doesn't come out as 12, it's not bad luck you didn't win, it was a poor investment and low odds. Sure the payoff can be huge, but more times then not you are going to lose.

He never re-injured the same ACL. It was other ACL and achilles. That is beyond bad luck, it's terrible luck.

End zone Dan is still in the league. That should tell us something, lol.

So, you've never ever heard that a player injuring one leg can injure the other leg due to overcompensating for the first injury? Interesting...

It's bad luck. Many college players come back from ACL tears too. Apparently you never heard of that.

And the Lions have Calvin, Golden Tate and Ebron. Moore is a nice addition. This team is loaded. Waste picks on Broyles and Bentley. Who the hell cares now. We are loaded for 2015.

No one claimed Broyles, is a free agent. Apparently no one thought he was worth the league minimum to add him to their team.

Injury schminjury....hes been healthy for 2 years and still got cut. He was worthless the day we drafted him. Go look at the top 5 list of all time wrs in college....a bunch of worthlessness. Why? Cause they were in college for that long and werent good enough to leave early.

There's only like 1 wr in the top 20 worth mentioning. And id say top 21 but 21 is patrick edwards and hes in the pre season hall of fame so i can't include him.

I'm still not understanding taking Ebron instead of OBJ. I don't hate the Broyles pick nearly as much as passing up OBJ.

Nobody thought OBJ would be that good. And it could be a one year wonder due to stricly targets with Cruz down and playing bad pass defenses the last 6 weeks. Ebron could have a better year 2, 3 and 4.

Ebron was BPA over OBJ. People would have cut off Mayhew's head if he took a WR in 2014.

I'm not understanding taking Ebron over many other players.

We needed a TE. Ebron BPA over OBJ and Fuller and Dennard. Maybe Lewan too.

Suh and Fairley weren't for sure gone in May 2014. Plus we ended up trading for Ngata. Maybe we don't make that Ngata trade if we have Donald. Maybe Donald sucks when he is the main focus unlike with Robert Quinn.

Operative word: COULD have a better year.

Watching players like OBJ, Donald, Martin, Mosley all go on to have incredible seasons in year 1 makes it more frustrating.

Here's what I pulled out of that last post: "weren't for sure, maybe, maybe." Lots and lots of speculative stuff. What I can tell you for sure is that Ebron sucked, and multiple picks after him would have been better options.
