buyers or sellers?

after last nights game I'm down with getting rid of everyone not named Cabrera.

That's not going to happen. Plus, you don't get rid of Iggy and many of the players we have are non trad-able for the fact they suck..

The 2 toughest position players to find decent hitters at are SS and Catcher, we are lucky enough to have Iglesias and McCann, that's a great core to build around. Add Cabrera, JD, Kinsler, and even an improving Castellanos and we have a solid group to build around.

This is just an amazing opportunity that an organization comes across maybe only once in its existence. Price, Cespedas, Soria, Avila, and Davis all with expiring contracts, all available to trade, all in the best sellers market anyone can remember, all with virtually no competition from other sellers. There are like 8-10 teams that are serious buyers and each will be coming to us bidding against each other. DD can parlay this into reshaping this team's future for the next 5 years.

Davis...not going to get much at all for him. Avila...not much of a market for him. I think only one team is looking for a catcher. Soria is the wild card...I can see a team looking for an 8th inning guy to bite on him....maybe a mid level prospect.

If you really want to replenish the farm you trade JD. I think you could get more for him than any other player on the team.

Several teams are looking for a backup catcher, and a left handed hitting one to boot is a bonus, think we could get a major league ready arm for the BP for him. Davis brings speed, the right team will give us a decent prospect for him. JD is eligible for arbitration next year, means we can still keep him at a relative discount.

Soria is the best closer available, someone will overpay for him too.

Cespedas is basically the only bat available, think about what he's worth on the market normally and double it.

But Price is the player several teams will view as the difference between a World Series and going home early in the playoffs. People will overpay for a chance at a World Series.

We're going to get more for each of these guys than they are worth. Normal rules do not apply in bidding wars during a scarce market.

What can we get if we package Ausmus, Lamont and Jones in a trade? Maybe a very used, short, yellow bus???

Only a 7 game winning streak from being close to the wildcard :/

It really is depressing to think being only 4 games out of a wild card spot.. Problem is four games feels like ten games for this group... Keep JD, Iggy, Mccann, Miggy and trade the rest of the bunch of guys that are worth anything..

I heard on ESPN that the dodgers are interested in Price also... They always have talent in the farm system might as well raid them.. i would prefer trading to NL clubs..

Improving how?

Old clown shoes is a black hole of suck over at 3rd defensively, and his bat makes me miss Brandon Inge.

If he's ever to have any chance at being anything on the plus side of mediocre (a long way to go) he needs a new organization, because this one ruined him by rushing him up too early.

I see Nick as a token throw in on a deal with someone like Price for a couple top prospects and a reliever.

I'm optimistically sure DD won't sell a thing thus we miss the playoffs and go back to circa 2003.

On a side note Tram finished 9th in MOTY in AL 2003. How'd the hell that happen?

The Tigers are in a truly unique position, in a trade market that is incredibly thin in a league with more teams buying than ever near the trade deadline we have the top pitcher, hitter, and reliever on the market and they all have expiring contracts. It's going to be a bidding war and someone is going to wildly overpay for each of them. Heck, Alex Avila will bring something decent in return.

We're in a position to completely makeover our team by trading a bunch of guys who would be gone next year anyways. Just an incredible opportunity, let's hope DD doesn't screw it up. In this year, with this many teams looking for help, I think people are going to be shocked at what we get.

Amen to this entire post. Nicely said Johnny. Include selling high on JD and we could limit the pain significantly (as measured in years of rebuilding...or re-grouping as DD puts it).

From the team notes thread, brad and the tigers aren't giving up

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13...t-falling-race
Brad Ausmus holds team meeting, not ready to give up on season.
espn

Would expect nothing less however I think it's too late, 4 games out of a wild card feels insurmountable for a team that hasn't been able to get on a roll for months now. My gut says the decision has already been made and they are just going to wait till the end of this home stand to pull it. Even if they take the next two before going on the road I think it's over already.

I'm not a fan of trading JD but I understand the thought. I was thinking of the holes we could have next year if we traded JD.

LF, RF, 3 SP and closer(complete bullpen)

Trading Price, Cespedes, Avila and Soria could help cover those holes in 2-3 years if DD could ever understand what a good prospect looks like.

2016 Tigers
SP1 Sanchez
SP2 Verlander
SP3 ? / Greene
SP4 ?
SP5 ?

C McCann
1b Cabrera
2b Kinsler
SS Iggy
3b Clown Shoes
LF ?
CF Gose
RF JD
DH Victor

Bully
Feliz
Al Al

The Tigers have to beat out 3 teams just to get to a 1 game playoff.

Playoff teams get more many. The Tigers lost $20 Mill last year ($163 Mil Player Expense) and still made the playoffs. They currently sit at about $184 Mil in Player Expense. Are they pushing for the playoffs so they won't lose as much money, or do they honestly think they can win.

Some of the speculation I have read is that no matter what, DD is gone after this year when his contract expires. The family is trying to position the team for a sale. If this is the case, neither DD or the Illitch family would care what was left, if anything, from the minors.

God help us if Gose and Castellanos are still starters. I am not sold on McCann. He cannot hit righthanders, nor hit on the road. I am sure the prospect of Holaday being his backup is enticing. We absolutely need a LHB or two.

Hardy, Wilson and AA make the pen. After that, it is a guess.

I've been advocating for 3 way deals for a while. I think we can get current starters if we do it right. Maybe we get a #3 starter who is under contract for a few years, plus a prospect for Price. Maybe we can get a solid 8th inning reliever and a good out field prospect for Cespedas. Maybe we can get 3-4 good prospects for any combo of Avila, Soria, and Davis. The 1st two scenarios might take 3 way deals.

We can get a couple proven major league players in return in this market and we can shore up our roster with them and free up money at the same time. We can also strengthen our farm system. We can then spend on a #1 pitcher and a good closer after the season and we'll be right back contending IMO.
