buyers or sellers?

hate to say it/think it but yes, at this point should anyone be off the table? even Miggy? I would not be one least bit surprised if even DD isn't back next year. Sure it's possible Mr I will never give up I just can't see anything short of a rebuild in order before these guys become the phillies. The Tigers may end up going back to the basement ala 2003 after this year i'm afraid. Man I hope the Lions will finally give us all something to hope for again.

I won't hold my breath on that though.

I know this year is shot,if we let Price go,who do we replace him with?

I say keep him and then add some pieces to go along with him. Face it Price is the only horse we got in the barn and if we let him go, we'll be the laughing stock in baseball next year.

we already lost...

J.V. is all but washed up and Sanchez ain't worth a s*** half the time.

You cannot afford to keep Price and rebuild. It is an either or. You cannot do both.

When healthy, there is nothing wrong with Sanchez. And I for one, haven't given up long term on JV.

I'd rather be the laughing stock of baseball with the potential to get it back in a few years vs what they are now, a team with no direction and no future.

At least if you trade Price, Cespedes, etc... and get some prospects we can get excited about the future. This team is dead and rutterless right now.

I know it is, but sending out JV on opening day next year and he gets rocked,there's not too much left. We can't rebuild a pitching staff once they are all gone, in one year. we can get position players anywhere, but finding a stud like Price doesn't happen all the time.

From an article I found.

"In 2016, the situation is somehow uglier. The Tigers have just five players signed to guaranteed contracts, and those players will be making a total of $104.8 million. Detroit also begins their $6 million yearly payments to the Rangers for Prince Fielder in 2016, and owns a $10 million club option with a $1 million buyout on Joe Nathan, meaning they?ll be on the hook for at least $111.8 million?with just five players signed."

Now, add Price and that is 6 guys for $142M.

Hell, this is the result of what DD has been doing with this team. He built this team on a house of glass. At some point, the walls were going to come crashing in. I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

I'm on the side of selling, but maybe going after some Mike Fiers type trades right now wouldn't be a bad idea. We need to do a better job of getting some better cheap options on this team.

Salary for just 5 players

2016 = $111.8 Mil (5 players arbitration eligible, making $10.8 Mil)

2017 = $107.8 Mil (12 players arbitration eligible)

J.D. Martinez is arbitration eligible. He is making $3 Mil in 2015. He easily makes $10 Mil in arbitration. Without trades and assuming normal arbitration awards, the Tiger payroll in 2016 will sit at $132 Mil with just 10 players. Adding Price to the mix will put it at at least $160 Mil. We still would need 14 more player salaries. $515 k league minimum x 14 = $7.21 Mil.

Even without Price, the team payroll stands to be at least $140 Mil in 2016 without trades. And that is having at least 14 players making the league minimum.

I am sorry, but Price is a luxury this team cannot afford to have and still have hopes of making the World Series some day.

Next year....

We aren't going to get to keep Price. It's just a fact. Someone else is going to pay him more then we can. There is just no way we can sign him, so he's essentially already gone, from a 2016 outlook.

We are going to have to endure a lean year or two, it happens to every team. But if we sell smartly, we can become competitive sooner rather then later with a full rebuild from the ground up.

Sounds like the majority of this board just want to blow this hole team up and hope to be competitive again in 4 or 5 years.

Marlins are the only team I can think of that that direction has actually paid off in a championship.

Don't think I have read anyone saying that at all. We can be competitive sooner than 4 or 5 years, but I'm not willing to mortgage any more of the future for a miniscule shot at winning this year. And by miniscule, I mean damn near impossible.

The Marlins last won the World Series in 2003, prior to that was 1997.

Payroll

2005 = $60.4 Mil

2004 = $42.1 Mil

2003 = $49.5 Mil

2002 = $42.0 Mil

1998 = $41.7 Mil

1997 = $48.7 Mil

Exactly my point, they traded everyone they could from that 97 team and didnt compete again till they got a lot of that young talent to carry then in 2003

Not sure how may of these were home grown and i think they were sort of one year wonders if i am remembering right...Poor the year before.. third place the year after and losing record two years after winning.. Not saying i would'nt take it.. ( a title)!!!

1 C Ivan Rodriguez........31
2 1B Derrek Lee.............27
3 2B Luis Castillo............27
4 SS Alex Gonzalez.........26
5 3B Mike Lowell.............29
6 LF Todd Hollandsworth...30
7 CF Juan Pierre...............25

Miggy was 20 on this club and I think starting by seasons end.. Next youngest bench player was 27 years old. Average age was 27.7

The marlins pitching staff was pretty you though other then Moehler

I'd call the present state of the team "competitive." It used to be "contending." So, yes, certain players cannot return next season or even remain on the team this season for the longer-term success of the organization.

Pierre, Lowell, and Lee were all regulars they got through those trade. A couple other pieces out of the bullpen as well.

There starting pitching was built through the draft with guys like Beckett, Penny, Willis, and Burnett

Pavano (07/02) trade with MON for Cliff Floyd

Penny (07/99) trade with ARZ for Matt Mantei

Redman (01/03) trade with DET for Robinson, Henkel and Knott

Willis (12/02) trade with CHC for Alfonseca and Clement

Beckett was the only starter from their 2003 World Series team to be drafted by the organization.

Burnett was hurt for most of the 2003 season. Still, he was drafted by the Mets and acquired via trade Feb 1998 for Al Leiter.
