buyers or sellers?

The Tigers have to beat out 3 teams just to get to a 1 game playoff.

Playoff teams get more many. The Tigers lost $20 Mill last year ($163 Mil Player Expense) and still made the playoffs. They currently sit at about $184 Mil in Player Expense. Are they pushing for the playoffs so they won't lose as much money, or do they honestly think they can win.

Some of the speculation I have read is that no matter what, DD is gone after this year when his contract expires. The family is trying to position the team for a sale. If this is the case, neither DD or the Illitch family would care what was left, if anything, from the minors.

Yeah I can't imagine DD being back next year. He'd already have a contract if that were the case. The timing makes sense to break up this marriage. This is it for him as GM of the Tigers.

I wish Ned Coleti was still Gm of the Dodgers. I could see him putting this guy in a package for David Price.

Julio Urias

No way we could get him with the new GM that's in LA

What is the front office doing? With blips about the Tigers could even be selling the team, as Ilitch's son is starting to run things, they might do alot more in the offseason.

Personally, I don't think at this point in time it is worth going after anything.

I know this isn't an important cog to have with a team that could possibly be dismantled, but I would just love to see them trade for either Chapman of Kimbrel. How many f'n years have we suffered with horseshit closers???

In hindsight, Something that they should have done if they were so intent on adding star players and "being all in for the World Series or bust" , was to have gone all the way a couple of years ago and gone over the luxury cap $$$$ number, just fk it for a couple of years, and then get back under.

Has there been anything new on the franchise sale rumor? I recall the BS from the one hockey writer when the Ilitch family was doing real estate and portfolio valuations leading up to the new arena build, but they strongly shot the rumors down. Ken Holland came out saying flatly that it wasn't true and that people were just making shit up.

In the past week to 10 days, I posted 2/3 stories with some mention of Ilitch's could be selling.

I like Neil's thinking here.

How The Tigers Could Buy.
from the nedtb
Not a bad idea... that would be almost exactly what's needed if we were to buy. Not sure what we'd have to give up to make that happen. Most likely it couldn't be anyone in a significant role on the current roster if the plan was to contend in 2015. A three way trade could make sense here if another contender in need of a bat were to get involved. Cespedes would be the most logical one to move in that scenario. We could also move Davis/Castellanos/Avila out without too much impact.

I just went back and skimmed through the massive Tigers Notes thread you keep up (thank you, BTW) and found the stories you mentioned. I think writers are making serious leaps to create headlines. Chris Ilitch getting more visibly involved in the operations of the sports and entertainment operations hardly means that they are gonna sell the Tigers. The Tigers front office is doing everything they can to avoid being sellers in 2015. If we do end up selling, it hardly means that the window is closed, that we are going into a full on rebuild, that 2016 is a lost cause, or that Mr. I will die without a World Series winner. Sorry, I just don't see it happening right now.

Whether or not they buy or sell, the window has closed. I know it's hard for some Tiger fans to accept it, but it is what it is. This team had a real nice run. Didn't get the WS. Window is closed, locked, taped, and boarded.

Pretty sure most fans are on board with the sell. Just hope that the front office is as well.

Last three seasons it's taken at least 88 wins to make the one and done playoff game! Right now the Tigers are 47-49. They'll have to go 41- 25 that's a .621 clip. Out play 4 others teams that are ahead of them and two that are tied in the lose column. Six games back of the second wild card in the lose column. You think they can do that then they're buyers.

The Detroit Tigers' starting pitching isn't good. But you knew that.

The last time the rotation struggled like this, the team missed the playoffs. That was 2010.

Maybe you knew that, too.

Those Tigers had the 11th-worst ERA in the American League. Or, to put it another way, a better ranking than they have this year.

That's right: David Price, Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez, Alfredo Simon, Shane Greene and the minor league call-ups who have filled in rank 14th in American League ERA.

One team — the Red Sox— has a poorer performing rotation. In all the talk about whether the Tigers should buy or sell, it really comes down to this: How is the franchise going to restock its rotation?

Because it's only going to get worse.http://www.freep.com/story/sports/m...t-tigers-starting-pitching-rotation/30655027/

The Royals gave up a lot for Cueto.

Looks like Price will fetch a kings ransom. I wasn't sure teams would give much up for a rental after the Kasmir Trade.

Trade deadline will be interesting this year

After being embarrassed 11-1 in the series finale and splitting a series with the lowly Boston Red Sox (44-55), it is clear the Detroit Tigers need to be sellers at the deadline. ESPN Analyst Jim Bowden tweeted before Sunday’s game that General Manager Dave Dombrowski told him they are going to try to win and declared the Tigers as deadline buyers.

How can you easily have the worst record in the AL since May 16th and expect to make the Wild Card? Detroit is more than 1 quality starter away from contending, IMHO.

That isn't DD talking...those are the words of an 89 year old billionaire with one foot in the grave!

If the Tigers buy, this franchise is going to be set up to fail for a long time. All of this for a potential wild-card coin flip.

It is also being reported by Joel Sherman (NY Post writer) that we are going to be buyers.

Smoke screen by DD maybe? I can hope.

That might be true...it might not. If true, it would be on of the worst things to happen to this franchise.
