Jim Caldwell has found the Lions? problem: The negative media
Posted by Darin Gantt on November 3, 2015, 12:26 PM EST

Quick, somebody get Jim Bob Cooter to the podium.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell has plenty of problems at the moment, but apparently has some issues with the coverage of his 1-7 football team.

Via Justin Rogers of MLive.com, Caldwell told reporters there that Detroit was the most negative media market he?s ever coached in.

It might have something to do with a few decades of losing interspersed with fleeting hope. The Lions are 529-632-32 all-time, have won zero Super Bowls and have made two playoff appearances in the last 15 seasons.

But nope, it must be the reporters, who continue to print scores which include the Lions being on the wrong side of the hyphen.

He also referred to the media room at the Lions facility as ?the dungeon of doom? (via Ashley Scoby of CBS Detroit).

Part of Caldwell?s issue might simply be a lack of perspective, having worked in small and/or successful markets such as Tampa Bay, Indianapolis and Baltimore prior to his arrival. And when he was building a 26-63 record at Wake Forest in the 1990s, there were those nasty critics at the Winston-Salem Journal but otherwise nobody really cared.

And perhaps it was a simple aside on his way into a deeper point. Caldwell is generally an insightful and thoughtful coach. But maybe the pressure that comes with having to jettison his offensive coordinator before their trip to London has caused him to look for enemies, and find them where they?re not hiding.

Can anyone give me a good reason why the media shouldn't have a negative attitude towards this team?

Drew Sharp is in that room. This doesn't surprise me.

Detroit's media is probably the softest of the major cities.

Caldwell should go work in Philadelphia. He'll love that shit.

Sounds like LKP's latest nonsense excuse. It's the fans/medias fault the team is lousy and 1-7. Makes sense to me.

The fans were abysmal during the Cardinals, Bears and Vikings home games. It wasn't over yet and they had abandoned ship. No home field advantage what so ever. Lions had one good loud home game against Denver.

3 out of 4 away to start the season just can't happen.

The fans aren't the reason, but they didn't help.

What do you want them to do? Honestly? How can you defend them supporting this product??

I don't give a shit if they are 0-4. You scream as loud as you can to fuck with the other QB.

Fans don't help the team play better. It's not like they start booing at the start. I'm not one to boo, never have, but play better (play like you give a shit) and the booing may stop.

They were so quiet the last 3 home games. The fans can have some impact. They should be Bears MNF 2011 loud every single game.

And the team does feed off the crowd energy. Especially a fragile team like Detroit.

If the team needs energy from the fans to play better we need a new team.

Fragile...lol!

If that's the case, I agree...we need a whole new team

Fans tend to show as much energy as the team does. When coaches and players check out in the 2nd half, the fans follow suit.

oh FFS what now, LKP and Caldwell blaming fans now, LOL. well isn't that special.

Hey Caldwell. Let's put it in perspective for ya buddy, 1 playoff since 1957, ONE!! You can't live in this town and NOT be negative towards the cryin lions. Your job is to turn that around and give the city a reason to hope. You failed, and you should be fired ASAP!

Next man up!!!!!>>>>

I also find it hilarious that nobody mentions the fact that the fanbase or the media hasn't changed from last year to this year...however, team personnel and quality of play has, and the Lions are worse for it. Fans and the media weren't a problem last year, right?

My message to any member of the Lions organization wasting their breath on this shit:

Play better or STFU

Lions need a coach with a much thicker skin, not to mention have some balls. They don't even have to be the size of atoms to be bigger than Caldwell's, just have some.

Fucking asshole quit on the team and he expects the fans to not quit on him? GTFO. I'd rather the team not have a single coach at this point, just go out and play sandlot football. They'd have much better success just going out and playing without a plan.

Caldwell will not survive the weekend. Him opening his mouth about the media just proves he has little time left. I figured he'd finish the season, but I'm questioning that now. This guy is imploding

To put this on the fans is a joke. Why do the fans deserve ANY blame?

The fans deserve some blame. But Caldwell didn't put it on the fans or the media if you read the full article by mlive.

And Caldwell said he saw the negativety before last year by the way.
