Footwork was one of the biggest reasons behind Matthew Stafford's struggles in 2013. Jeremy Reisman examined how poor footwork contributed to Stafford's overall lack of accuracy, and really this issue was nothing new. Stafford's footwork has always been inconsistent, and it's really a much bigger concern going forward than his side-arm delivery.

With that in mind, it's good to hear that new Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell is planning to work on footwork with Stafford. After reviewing all of Stafford's throws from the 2013 season and meeting with Stafford during his interview, Caldwell recently told SI's Peter King this:

"We have used a set of drills in coaching over the years that I think has added some consistency to all the quarterbacks we?ve coached. The great majority of poor throws?people look at the arm, and that?s important obviously, but I think footwork is the key. I can pull up any gamefilm and show you how our footwork drills help you. In a nutshell, the feet and eyes work together. If I?m throwing in a particular direction, my footwork is pointing in the same direction?directly at the target. We?ll work on it with Matthew, and he will do them flawlessly."

Throughout the Lions' coaching search, many people said that the top priority for the new head coach would be to "fix" Stafford. Clearly, Caldwell has a plan to make Stafford better, and the fact that the previous regime didn't do enough to fix Stafford's footwork is a big reason why a coaching change was made in the first place. Hearing that Caldwell already has drills in mind for Stafford to work on his footwork is extremely promising.

Even if nothing comes of it, at least it's being talked about. It seemed like under Schwartz that everyone put their head in the sand when it came to Stafford, dodging any question about his mechanics.

Caldwell sucks! Terrible hire! Clearly he has no fucking clue! Fire Mayhew! Stafford's a bum!

Talk talk talk results are all that matter

Show me, prove it on the field Caldwell!

Let me guess...you're already practicing your posting barbs/darts to sling@ the Lions after their 3rd or 4th game of the '14 season...amirite?

Or perhaps as soon as after their 4th preseason game?

heh..

Even the most optimistic Lions homer has to admit that there has never been a true sea-change in the Lions loong history of mediocrity or bust, and even hiring a notoriously discipline-minded HC has not worked for the franchise in the past (Bobby Loss...err..Ross) who, IMO, played a role in Barry Sanders' decision to abruptly retire prior to the '99 season.

Did my sarcasm not come through?

Staffords got the worst feet of ANY NFL qb. Fixing his feet might be key, if it can be done. Imo Stafford is just plain clumsy

clearly youre an idiot for spellchecking people on a message board....

When you insult someone's intelligence, you should at least learn how to spell a simple word. It's like calling someone short when you're 5'3.

And this has-been OC we hired has now been quoted saying:

were going to score
were going to stop the other team from scoring
...and footwork is the key for Stafford

wow...some in-depth analysis from our brainiac of a HC. Is brainiac spelled correctly monster?

I'm not saying he's going to be a great coach. I'm not convinced he's the right guy, but your little crybaby fits are really annoying, bro. He's not saying anything differently than any other newly hired head coach. Sit back, enjoy the offseason and wait to see the product on the field. I've never heard someone bitch as much as you do. I get the frustration. We all have it. I've been a lifetime fan and have only seen one playoff win. I want it to get better, but I will give Caldwell a chance. Anyone who has Peyton and Dungy's adorsement at least deserves that.

The fact dungy is calling around telling mayhew to hire him made me more pissed at mayhew. How do you not do your due diligence on OCs that actually are doing well in their current positions? We hired a guy about to get fired for being responsible for leading his team to 3rd place in his division!...its ridiculous that Baltimore is not ok with that but mayhew is lol. Why should I give him a chance if he doesn't deserve it?

Is he really clumsy or has he developed bad habits from fear of injury, avoiding pressure/sacks/tips and/or just from out of rote including carelessness, overconfidence, or laziness? Stafford obviously isn't the most mobile QB in the NFL, although he can throw on the run, albeit "somewhat" inaccurately at times.

Doesn't seem like he was throwing sidearm off his back foot while slinging the ball with such full-force, regardless of distance, coverage, and/or field position quite as often earlier in his career. It appears to have become an issue when he first wore a glove to protect his broken index finger ~midway through the '11 season.

Not sure if its oline scheme or what....but you rarely see him step up in the pocket to throw a pass. Hes way more apt to fade back and throw while falling away.

The Lions wanted a coach with prior head coaching experience, specifically with a history of working with QBs. Our choices were essentially Whisenhunt, Caldwell, or Norv Turner.
Obviously you disagree with their plan, but at least they have one and stuck to it. Which is an advancement for this organization.

Not sure there were any hot names out there anyways. Who were the other choices? Who were your top choices?

agree it was a bad offseason to finally fire your HC due to the limited options.....something im sure mayhem didn't think about prior to firing gym shorts. But Obrien was my guy mainly cause I thought he would be the best option to "fix" Stafford....ya...we didn't even interview him.

Whiz or Roman I thought were the best OCs ...whiz jacked us and roman....didn't interview him either.

The Lions came out and said JOhn Gruden was a serious contender for the job..if that's true I think he would do a better job than Caldwell.

I thought Caldwell had nothing to do with Stafford because he's the HC. That's what Mitch said ..lmao.

As for the Caldwell hire. They got their guy. An experienced, offensive minded, QB fixer. Good hire, there was nobody out there anyways and we got a good coach.
