He wants the Lions as a goal to be in the Top 5 in the Fewest penalties in the NFL. IF he Succeeds or even just the Top 10 how many more wins could this get Detroit?

Well since Seattle, Denver, and SF all had more penalties than us....and the least was Miami and Minnesota

How about top 5 in wins? How they get there is irrelevant.

If it makes em less aggressive then I'd say even fewer wins will result...I fear Caldwell is going to create the opposite problems they had under shorts with talk like this, maybe keep the goal to personal foul numbers

Its not really the penalties as a whole its the pre and post play penalties we need to eliminate.

This. There are certain ones you can control. We won't be able to help the ridiculous penalties that refs call for hitting a QB, etc. But it seems we jump offsides at least twice a game. False start penalties didn't seem bad at all this year.

someone tell our idiot coach the most penalized team in the NFL is in the super bowl. There should be about 50000 things on your list above being top 5 in penalties....start with a top 5 list for OC...how bout that?!

Yeah because being top 5 in penalties is such a bad thing.... Everyone including yourself have cried about how undisciplined we are yet get butt hurt when the new guy says he wants to reduce the penalties and become more disciplined... There is no fucking pleasing you negative fucking Nancy over here 24/7.

But it's almost like he said it because he thought we wanted to hear it..I would take top 5 in anything. But if it's not followed up with playoff wins and a title it doesn't mean shit.

exactly....the guy is a walking talking point. "were gonna be tough, were gonna be smart, were gonna score, the other teams not gonna score, were not going to commit penalties. Are you with me?!!!!"

blah blah blah...what an idiot...

Ok then you even just said it yourself. If it is not followed up with playoffs wins then you guys can start the hate and negativity. Don't jump on the guy and dislike him for shit he says BEFORE he even coaches a damn game... Let the man at least get through one regular season game if not a preseason game before the criticism starts.

what kind of stupid rule is that? since when aren't we allow to judge people based on what they did prior to coming here? cause Caldwell hasn't done jack.

If the Lions were to become top 5 in fewest penalties @ the end of next season. and as an indirect result, win a playoff game, or better still, games, then of course I would be all for it. But I do think that their former HC Gym Shorts, really got the undisciplined ball rolling when he tussled with Jim Harbaugh after the 49ers ended the Lions' 5 game winning streak to start the '11 season.

It only snowballed from there, prodded along by Suh's stomping of the Packers' Dietrich-Smith on Thanksgiving Day and it being a nationwide broadcast.

If a team's HC becomes a target for derision b/c he lets his emotions and temper get out of control on the sidelines and the gridiron, then it follows that the team he coaches will be "fairley or unfairley" viewed the same way. Some Lions players even did their best to enhance the team's bad rep, such as Suh, Leshoure, Fairley, and Young...including off-season and off the field.

So the Lions hire Caldwell after giving the mercurial Schwartz the ziggy. Of course Caldwell is the polar opposite of Schwartz, with his rep being that he is an emotionless droid or zombie on the sidelines.

Referees have eyes and ears, and they see & hear just fine (well...most of them, anyway) If a team like the Lions or another heavily penalized team plays in a game that they are assigned to officiate, it seems like their flags would soon be burning a hole in their back pockets and they would be looking for any half-assed reason to throw it.

Ok so judge him on his past, never did I say you couldn't. Just don't criticize him on what he has said about his current job where he hasn't had a fair amount of time to be judged.

Everyone wanted the Lions to become more disciplined, right? I guess some wanted more than others. Caldwell saying this to me is the warning shot across the bow to the players that discipline is coming. Does anyone think Caldwell would win the Super Bowl and say, "yeah, but we were number 6+ in penalties, so we failed as a team"???

The only penalties they have to get rid of our the stupid mental ones. Like when step late Delmas decides to jaw at someone after a stop was made on third down. Or one of his patented hits too the head..and those encroachments from Fairley when he's inches from the ball..

What about Caldwells scheme did you not like? What specifically about his coaching style causes teams to fail?
