Can I get excited over Berry Yet?

We are only a few games below .500, still a lot of time to come back too.

We'll see, but I wouldn't count on it. This team has some major issues and will continue to struggle unless a few key players turn it around.

it might be one of those rare occasions where a hitter does better at the major league level.something about having the ball always being thrown near the plate, and more strikes.

This being offset, of course, by less mistake pitches, more break on the breaking balls, more movement on pitches, pitchers having better command of their pitches, and just the stuff in pitchers of general being better/more consistent.

It's not like they has done anything in his short time here to suggest he's got a chance of being even a decent hitter.

He's got a .552 BABIP, when that plummets 200 points, which it will, he'll return to what he is.

A fast player who can't get on base.

We've lost some key guys in the last couple weeks, once Ajax, Dirks, and Fister return we should be fine. Definitely need either a corner outfielder or 2B that can hit.

I'm not super excited yet, he seems to work the count well and put the ball in play though so he doing what he is supposed to do. I like his speed and his defense, him and Ajax is the OF would probably save a bunch of runs in themselves. We'll see how long he can keep it up, but if he has a .280 avg and is stealing bases, he is worth it.

He's not putting the ball in player though.

Hes striking out at a higher rate than Jackson did last season.

Of course not but I'm not a grump about it. I still like watching and things like this still interest me.

Berry's done a nice job while here, but when Ajax and Dirks are healthy there just won't be a place for him to play regularly, and him toiling on the bench as a late inning defensive replacement or a PR won't do him much good.

It's best to probably send him down and keep his AB's up when Dirks and AJ are back, so if/when we need him again he'll still be sharp.

But he really could fall into 1 of 2 categories right now:

1. He's playing well above his head/lucky(in terms of getting on base)

2. He's seeing more plain vanilla fastball strikes because he's supposed to be an easier out, and he's taking advantage.

Or after all his moving around from team to team he better get it together?

mjs won't be happy about anyone until they're hall of fame worthy :p

No, you have it wrong. When the team isn't expected to win, it's fine to get excited about new talent or promising futures, when the team is expected to win, it's hard to find anything else to get excited about.

There should be no excitement about a team that's 24-28 in a crappy division that went "all in" over the off-season.

WOW....what a stupid point of view.

So media opinion decides if you enjoy watching baseball on a year to year basis??? And it's only ok to get excited about a rookie if the team is overacheiving based on what "experts" say???

Simple minded people make me giggle.

So I take it you expected this team to play sub .500 ball all season?

And excuse me for not being all giddy because some 27 year old minor leaguer has a few good games while this team continues to lose.

Anyone who is happy with this current team obviously doesn't have high standards.

Optimists with blind faith make me giggle.

Can I be disappointed about...

Avila
Peralta
Raburn
DY
Boesch
Porcello
2nd base in general
Defense in general
Most of the bullpen
Team record
Hitters 5-9
Leyland batting garbage 2nd

...yet?

Yep.

Don't worry though Mitch...I'm totally excited about Laird, he's looking like Babe Ruth out there.

Grandy Grand Grumperson. Hey, that sounds cool ;-)

Avila has a 112 OPS+ this year.

He's well within the range of what reasonable people expected out of him, no reason to be disappointed in him.

Expected is all relative. You might expect different numbers than what someone else expected.

Well it's still a drop-off from last year, unless his numbers last year are unsustainable.
