Cano wants $305M

If Miggy had his best offensive year at 30. As you say Tom, staying where he's at isn't so bad. Decline for the next 3-4 years is probably still better than just about anyone.

but they have him signed for 2 more years. Let those years play out. When he starts the season after this contract is up he will be 33...he will decline. Someone is going to pay him based on what he has done not what he will do. Let someone else do that!

Give him a 3 year extension, something. Letting Miggy go will set this team back.

If I'm Miggy or his agent there is no way I sign a 3 year extension. That would be stupid on their part. If his agent is doing his job the next contract he signs should take him to the age of 38-40. If he extends he will want at LEAST 6 years IMO.

Guys do well into their late 30's. Maybe not hall of fame numbers but well. I think you're too focused on Albert Pujols. Looking at Miggy's skill set, I could see him with a .300 average, high OBP and some home runs at age 35 and up..

If that is all you are getting then let him walk. You don't pay someone $30M a year for that. Heck...instead of letting him walk for nothing maybe trade him after next season.

Who says he's going to get $30? And .300 .420 with 20 home runs isn't bad. And it was just a base mark.

I am just guessing. $25 a year seems to be the going rate for top players now. Cano will likely get that. In 2 more years....$30 will probably be where they are.

.300 .420 with 20HR with no defense isn't worth $25-$30M a year. The Tigers will be able to make the team better using that kind of money elsewhere.

It is when you consider anyone putting up those numbers get 20m plus.

Plus its not as easy as saying "use the money elsewhere". Elsewhere would be Max and Rick and Doug. And maybe Vmart. So we'll have a bigger payroll without Miggy and not be near as good.

Out of all of the players that hit 25 or more HRs in 2013 (30 players) only 2 were paid over $20M per year. Prince and Miggy.

The top 40 in OPS this year (.818 and up) there were only 2 that were paid over $20M per year. Prince and Miggy.

There are a LOT of players out there that can be productive that DON'T get paid over $20M per year!

I wrote: "The Tigers should do what the Cards did with Pujolis....use him while he is in his prime then say goodbye."

They did in a sense say goodbye as they gave him a take it or leave it offer. Then someone else gave him $40M more than they offered.

I cringe when I think what this team might look like in a five years. The Tigers might have 2 CC Sabathias (JV & Scherzer) and 2 Alberts (Prince and Miggy) on their team!

C'mon Tom, everyone knows the Cardinals are invulnerable to criticism. Because they knew with certainty that a 10-yr, $220 M offer was one that they knew Albert would refuse. Right. And the Angels stepped in with an extra $20 M just to make the Cardinals look ridiculous.

Well, a franchise like the Cardinals cannot afford to look ridiculous. Now you get the hell out of here!

this is when a GM makes his money. Max won't be a good investment. He will likely get a JV type contract and he will be 30. Trade him after the WS. Doug Fister will probably come at a decent pricetag. Probably less than Sanchez. Porcello will be even cheaper but may not be worth it since he really has a low ceiling.

They should probably increase their budget on scouting and development vs. over paying guys that will be past their primes.

Cano is a very good player but not worth that kind of Jack. I sure hope no one gives him that kind of money due to our impending free agents. Besides, he would not be the missing piece in the event we fall short of a title. Our Bullpen will more than likely be our short-coming.

I do think the Cards got lucky when the Angels offered the extra $20M. But I will bet Albert's agent went back to the Cards with the Angels offer to see if they would match or beat it. That is just smart business on the agent's part. Either way...the Cards have the best record in the baseball and the Angels are sitting at home and still have to deal with the fact they owe Albert over $200M and he is a shell of his old self.

Yeah but I'm talking about both high average and high OPS plus 20 dingers. In any event he'll get paid, not on the fact he might only hit 20 HR 5 years down the road, but on his current production and past years.

well, I just hope it is another team that pays him.

That has to do with the Cardinals having a better organization. Who do we bring in within the same payroll and compete, with no Miggy. We don't draft well enough..

Personally, I'd love to be the TB Rays. Lower payroll that can compete but that means getting rid of DD and MI making a hard stand on getting the payroll lower..

I'm a big fan of team, not players. I was a huge fan of Grandy, once we traded him - I wasn't any more. So whatever happens happens. I just think we'll go into the toilet without Miggy and the ml system we have. No one gives me to warm and fuzzy outside Nick. C.

I think the smart thing to do would be invest more in scouting and development. If their budget is $10M a year triple it. Get the best people in here. Shit...steal them away from the Rays and Cards if you have to!

Easier said then done. And we're already stuck with two large contracts, JV and Prince. I don't see it but we really need a WS win. Then they can do a partial Miami Marlins..
