Castellanos playing for Dirks ENTIRE job.

One of Leyland's quotes from last year:

"Dirks needs to get stronger." Leyland said. "I don't know yet whether he can take the wear and tear of playing every day. He's a very good baseball player. Potentially a very good major league player."

Actually, I think this supports what Leyland is saying. Nowhere in that quote does he say that Dirks is not an every day player. He said he doesn't know yet if he can take the wear and tear of playing every day. Pretty close to what he says in that article.

But he said it last year. Why would I lie about that. And managers do change opinions now and then.

''He's obviously making a heck of an impression so far,'' Leyland said of the former first-round draft pick. ''You'd be foolish to say he wasn't.''

If Castellanos keeps it up how do you keep him off the opening day roster

It's the 1st week of Spring Training.

Long ways to go, and like I said before, look at how Raburn and Young did last year in ST.

The fact is we don't "need" him yet because of all the OF's we already have, and can allow him more time to mature.

But those guys are older vets who sucked.

The only way i see Castellanos coming north with the team is if everyone else is injured or hits under .150 for spring training. even if he outperforms someone like kobernus, they'd probably still go with the latter.

given what happened with verlander, zumaya, porcello, and perry though i could be totally wrong. if he lights it up the whole month they might decide to keep him with the team, but i still highly doubt it.

I just hope he makes their decision very difficult. I just don't think they will take him up because he won't get enough ABs in Detroit.

The roads are littered with ST superstars. Let the kid mature some. It's a virtual lock he'll see some showtime this season, but it might not be in April or May.

Let's give Russo the starting 2b spot; he's hitting .500.

Didnt we learn anything from the Mike trout situation last year? Trout was sent back to the minors because "the vet was more likely to succeed." I bet the Angels are still kicking themselves for that bonehead logic today, because if Trout was on the opening day roster, the Angels probably would have won at least a wildcard. Go with the best player, period.

There are more stories about the rookie who stunk it up than stories like Mike Trout.

If anything, Castellanos is cementing himslef as one of the best prospects in baseball. He's been quite impressive. Kid could be great.

I am not a big Andy Dirks fan. If Nick tears it up all spring I would rather have him as the every day LF and make Dirks the 4th OF. I doubt that happens though.

Should probably wait until the kid has success above A ball before promoting him.

His and Trouts situations are not similar.

I know spring training is a small sample size but I would say that the talent level in spring training is much better than AA or AAA ball.

Not necessarily. Even if you have ML pitching, they're just trying to get back into the grove, trying new stuff etc. Plus, you still have the AA and A guys in ST as well.

And it's not like he has 60 PA's. A hit-less game and average drops tremendous.

Mike Trout is that exception that proves the rule.
