@jonmorosi Nick Castellanos starting in RF at Erie tonight. Like I said Sunday, no chance ‪#Tigers‬ will rush him. Nope. No chance. They NEVER do that.

Good to see. Obviously he's not going to be playing 3rd base in Detroit in the next couple years, and the Tigers have clear issues in the corner outfield spots. I was previously opposed to bringing such young players up, but with the success that Harper, Trout, Trumbo, and other young players are having I think that Nick could potentially be that class of player.

I thought this would happen. If DD decided to keep Castallanos at 3B that would be a pretty clear sign they were going to trade him. But moving him, in my opinion, is a clear sign he is going NOWHERE.

Hope he's playing in Comerica Park sooner rather than later.

I can see them giving him a chance earlier if Boesch continues to suck. But at this point, a September call up is a given I would imagine.

I tend to agree with that. No harm in bringing him up in September, and possibly earlier if the Tigers dont trade for a corner outfielder/ Boesch doesnt perform or Andy Dirks doesnt come back in time.

He's not ready.

You can call him up in September, but he's not MLB ready, hell he's only got a partial season above A+ under his belt, has not developed his power yet, or matured his plate discipline.

You could do harm bringing him up too early though, because he'd be outclassed by the pitching and that could hurt his confidence.

I see your point, but I disagree.

He certainly could USE more time in the minors, most players of his draft status could, but he has proven at every level he can hit. Would he have to make adjustments, of course. He has a walk rate that could be improved but his career slg% in the minors is 1/100th of a point lower than Harpers and he is a career .335 hitter. He has shown gap power and improving HR numbers at each stop. And to be honest, it's not like Boesch or Delmon (until VERY recently) has shown much power or plate diciplin to this point either.

But as mentioned before, the recent success of some other YOUNG players could force the Tigers hand here.....especially if the offense sputters. (Obviously it has gotten much better in the last 2 weeks)

It all depends on if Boesch comes on in the 2nd half or goes in the tank and if Delmon is still a Tiger after the deadline. My guess is that an Austin Jackson, Andy Dirks and Nick Castellanos outfield is what you'll see in 2013....

Just my prediction.....Castellanos makes his debut in September because Boesch comes on a little in the 2nd half.... but NC makes the roster in '13 and stays.

I hope they don't get rid of this kid in a trade. I think he's going to be a stud.

He went 2 for 5 in his debut in right field with 2 runs scored. Had quite a few put outs and no errors, not quite sure how he looked out there, but seemed to hold his own.

Outfield? Unless they are giving up on him as a third baseman there is no reason to do that. His trade value is higher as a 3b. His real life value is higher as a 3b. And although Miguel has been serviceable at 3b, the reality is he and Prince will be splitting time between 1b and dh as soon as VMarts contract is up.

Considering the fact that Victor has two years on his contract after this year Castellanos will not be a third baseman on the Tigers for at least those two years. Cabrera will be at 3rd until that time, so the only option is to have Castellanos in the outfield. The Tigers arent going to trade Castellanos unless they get a Cabrera like return, which is doubtful.

I disagree with "his value or trade value". Teams already knows he can play 3rd, learning the OF gives him more value. The more positions the better.

Agreed. It's not like you forget 3B over night.

What 3B? That his position. Not saying he's a stud at 3rd but he knows 3B.

Not really.

His footwork there is still bad.

He'd be about as effective as Cabrera is there right now, he could be better with more coaching, practice, and reps, but it's better he learns that stuff in the minors.

If the Tigers keep him at OF for now, and the next few years, he probably won't ever be a 3B.

I don't have a problem with that. Teams need RF too.

Just refuting the point that he could go back to 3B and play it again.

Although, if there is a team that would do that, it would be the Tigers.

You mention his career BA and his SLG being a point below Harpers...did you forget all of this was at Lakeland (A+) or below for the most part?

He's played in about a quarter of a seasons games at AA, seriously guys think he's ready to jump AAA and go right to Detroit in Sept. and 2013?

I would be more floored by Castellanos making the team out of ST in 2013 than I was when we signed Prince, that's how unlikely it is.

Of course I said the same about Turner when lots of people insisted he would be in 2012's rotation out of ST.

Thumb, you know how many players never play in AAA? In fact AA is better than AAA, normally AAA is just ml fodder, guys that go back and forth in emergency or studs like Turner who jumped to the ML and when sent back down went to AAA.

Turner came up from Erie, in case you didn't know. Now of course this isn't all the time but great players usually skip AAA.

JV and Miggy never played above AA.
