While I respect his legacy as a coach, he stayed too long, failed to stop Jerry Sandusky and created an atmosphere that permitted the most abhorrent behavior possible, involving at risk and vulnerable kids. I don't feel sorry for him, his family or Penn State fans at all. The good he did will and should outweigh the recently revealed bad, but I can't say there has been another such situation ever. Bear Bryant passed shortly after leaving his role at Alabama and certainly had controversial aspects to his legacy, but Paterno is in a class all by himself and for a lot of reasons.
The cancer sped up the demise

Rest in Peace, Joe.
