Chargers ask for permission to interview Teryl Austin

So he can go onto bigger and better things and the Lions can hopefully replace him with someone who can figure out a scheme that can get pressure on a QB

Like Austin did when he had talent along the dline?

Had all year come up with something that might help, never did or wasn't successfully..sometimes you have to come up with something based on what you have and not want you want

Dinged up pro bowl DE, old DT, rookie DT that isn't really much of as pass rusher. Got some production out of Hyder. The talent on our defense is severely lacking in the skill department without a 100% healthy Ansah and Slay. Austin hopefully begs Quin to get him some talent this off season.

I suspect he'll finally get an offer..

Any good Replacement options?

At the top of my hell NO list would be rob Ryan

Rams, chargers, jags, bills, 49ers, broncos. Lots of openings

Possibly the Texans if they go out in the 1st round to an Oakland team that has no QB.

"Teryl Austin is reportedly starting to pick up head coaching interest for the third straight offseason.

The Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator will interview for vacancies in San Diego and Los Angeles according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the first surfacing of Austin’s name in this hiring cycle. Rapoport is reporting the interviews will take place in the days after the Lions’ playoff game at Seattle on Saturday night."

Translation: He will be waiting until after the season is over to interview.

I am not concerned. I know the board views Austin as the holy defensive savior, but I am just not impressed. His scheme's aren't unique. His guys play great one game, and then melt down the next. I see him as a middle of the road, maybe a slightly above average coordinator, and I think he's fairly replaceable.

And really, I am not impressed with Jim Bob Cooter either. Everyone talking about what he's done with Stafford... we're still struggling to score points and have been all season. Stafford looks good, we have no run blocking, no run game, and no surprise wrinkles to anything. Run on first down, throw on second down, pray on third down... and that's genius level shit?

I am just not worried if they both go, or if they both stay. Middle of the road guys in my book.

That's about the only thing we'll agree on. He's the token black candidate.

I think Austin is a good D Coordinator. This defense improved every week despite the fact that our best player (Ansah) has been playing hurt all year, our second best player (Slay) missed several games with injuries, and Levy was out for the first 13 weeks of the season. Our Defense is extremely thin in both talent and depth, so the fact that this group was able to be even average after the key injuries is quite remarkable IMO. Of course the pass rush was lacking, but that's what happens when your best DE gets hurt in the off-season and manages only 1 sack. I don't think any DC in the league could have done much better with this staff.

I think it's a long shot he gets hired as a HC, but I wouldn't be completely surprised if some team takes a chance on him. I think him leaving would be a bigger loss than most of you are willing to admit, but I'd be happy for him if he gets a shot.

Doesn't that also go with the fact we were playing sub par teams..?

Ya sure it does, but they did face several very good offenses this season.

GB and Dallas are both top 5 offenses, and torched our D, however outside of those two teams they held up pretty well all things considered.

NO 2nd in Offense at 29.3 ppg (13 vs Det)
WSH 12th in offense at 24.8 ppg (17 vs Det)
TEN 14th in Offense at 23.8 ppg (15 vs Det)

I'm not saying the Lions have an elite or even good defense. I just think that Austin did a good job given the talent he was provided to work with. This defense literally has been gutted since '14, yet Austin has them performing at the league average, despite missing his best players for extended periods of time. In addition he's turned the Defense from one of the least disciplined / sloppiest units into one of the best tackling and least penalized groups.
