Ya sure it does, but they did face several very good offenses this season.

GB and Dallas are both top 5 offenses, and torched our D, however outside of those two teams they held up pretty well all things considered.

NO 2nd in Offense at 29.3 ppg (13 vs Det)
WSH 12th in offense at 24.8 ppg (17 vs Det)
TEN 14th in Offense at 23.8 ppg (15 vs Det)

I'm not saying the Lions have an elite or even good defense. I just think that Austin did a good job given the talent he was provided to work with. This defense literally has been gutted since '14, yet Austin has them performing at the league average, despite missing his best players for extended periods of time. In addition he's turned the Defense from one of the least disciplined / sloppiest units into one of the best tackling and least penalized groups.

But DC don't get HC jobs just based on they did just okay. 13th ranked defense (points), 18th in yards. 28th Turnovers (14).

They do if the league takes notice of other seasons, they notice injuries, how they deal with players, their ideas about personnel and schemes and which teams they had trouble with (top 10 offenses Colts, Packers twice, Cowboys)
