Coachwatch 2014

Our biggest problem now may be Denver.

Supposedly Denver wants Quinn. Atlanta wants Quinn. Rumor says Quinn wants Atlanta.

But if Denver is able to sway Quinn to Mile High, the Falcons fall back choice would likely be Austin. They are interested enough to have him in for a second interview.

Kubiak and Gase have been linked to Denver too. But yeah if Quinn goes to Denver that may be an easy move for the Falcons to snatch up Austin.

Broncos have asked for permission to talk to Austin too.

As long as Fox takes the Chicago job I think Austin will be staying with us another year.

Does anyone think Schwartz could return as a DCo if Austin leaves? And would Detroit burn to the ground afterward?

grandy, I don't see how that could ever happen. Schwartz's ego is way too big to come back to Detroit in a "demoted" role. I think he'd be a d-coordinator anywhere but here.

Funny. I knew exactly he was...

I had no idea who he was. But I'll be honest, I had no idea who Joe Lombardi was either.

I questioned why a DB coach with no real experience at the NFL level beyond that would be a good candidate for a D-Coordinator.

I did not question Lombardi... because of his last name. I admit it. I was suckered.

We still don't know if Austin is great or Gunther was that bad!

Been arguing that point for months.

I will say, it's obvious Austin isn't bad. He may only be "acceptable" for all I know, but at this point I would be afraid of him leaving and being replaced by "that bad" again.

I'm happy to have him, but I have no idea if he's really awesome, or just got left with a ton of talent Gunther couldn't make work.

Man it sounded like Kubiak to Denver was an almost certainty. Is Austin their Rooney candidate or did they have Bowles in?

As far as I know, they did not have Bowles in. Austin could be their Rooney, but I would have to think that with as much attention as Austin has gotten this off-season, their interest in him is probably genuine.

And Kubiak may still be their guy, but you never interview one or two people. You find a pool you like and interview them all.

Last off-season, we were supposed to land Wisenhunt. We got Caldwell. We will never know if he was actually choice one or choice two... but if they hadn't done their due diligence, we'd have been screwed if Caldwell dropped out too.

If mayhew was interested the least bit in improving this team he'd can Lombardi.... but he isn't. Id go get gase.

Caldwell probably went to Lombardi and said be conservative. You think we ran 6 yard slants based on just Lombardi?

Eh maybe I'm in the minority then...

The Atlanta Falcons could move forward with two hot head-coaching candidates leading the team in 2015, if they decide to go that route.

A source indicated that part of Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin's pitch to become the Falcons' head coach is to bring Adam Gase along as his offensive coordinator. Gase, the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos this season, was a finalist for the San Francisco 49ers' coaching job and was among the first group of candidates interviewed by Falcons owner Arthur Blank and the search committee.

Although Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn emerged as the favorite for the Falcons after the first round of interviews, Austin had a chance to make a strong case during his second interview Thursday. With Gase in the mix, the potential formidable combination might not only fix a broken defense but also add more juice to an already potent offense led by quarterback Matt Ryan and Pro Bowl receiver Julio Jones.

If Gase joins the Falcons and takes their offense to another level, it would make him that much more attractive for head-coaching opportunities next year.

Both Quinn and Austin have contacted Gase about becoming offensive coordinator in Atlanta, a source said.

Because Gase has already met with Atlanta's brain trust in interviewing for the head-coaching job, the Falcons would be a convenient fit for him. Atlanta is considered the most appealing landing spot for Gase given the presence of Ryan, Jones and other pieces on an offense that finished eighth in the NFL in yards per game in 2014.

In addition to San Francisco and Atlanta, Gase interviewed for head-coaching jobs in Buffalo, Chicago and Denver.

The Falcons are expected to formally request permission for another discussion with Gase, who received a similar request from the St. Louis Rams and had interest from the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders in the past 24 hours.

Austin has also interviewed with the Bears and is scheduled to interview with the Broncos on Friday.

The Broncos boasted the league's second-best scoring offense this season at 30.1 points per game and the league's fourth-best total offense at 402.9 yards per game.

The Falcons are willing to wait for Quinn to finish his playoff run, with the Seahawks a favorite to repeat as Super Bowl champions. But Austin's proposal could be rather enticing to Blank.

Austin engineered the league's top-ranked rushing defense (69.3 yards per game) and second-ranked total defense (300.9 yards per game). The Lions tied for second in scoring defense, allowing just 17.6 points per game.

I personally think it's a dick move to offer a solid Head Coaching candidate (with more experienced and a longer resume of success than you) to be your coordinator. If I were Gase, I would tell the Falcons he will contact Austin to be his Defensive Backs coach just to make a point.
