Cool cap simulator

They'll have to pay it eventually. If Suh doesn't want an extension, that's going to be a big hit.

Okay. What if we trade him not that it's a possible but do we take the hit still..trying to understand this.

40 mil 35 million big fucking deal.

YES! Now you got it! It is a big fucking deal because it shows how it can be the difference between making the playoffs or not, and that is a big fucking deal!!! Congrats on finally understanding the point!

That $5M can be the difference between adding another 2 or 3 better pieces and that can mean the difference between winning and losing in close games. What if that money was put toward a better #2 WR, #1 or #2 CB, and #1 or #2 S or LB??? Improve those 2 or 3 positions slightly can be HUGE for the entire TEAM and lead to victories instead of defeats!

40 mil 35 million big fucking deal. Lions do fine in getting who they want in free agency. That is only thing it matters for the cap. Last I checked we got bush and Quin

Suh and Calvin are the lions best talents. Anyone that wants to get rid of them are crazy. Suh trade only if he makes it clear he is testing free agency after this season. Calvin and stafford go nowhere

I coulda swore it says over 51 million....

Suh still has about 19 million in dead money which would still count against the cap in a trade.

Yeah, and 5 million could be the difference between another Bush- or Quin-caliber player on the roster.

Over the course of his remaining contract or immediately?

I'm seeing about 9.7 in both 2014 and 2015, however 2015 is a player option so I'm not sure exactly how that would work.

just this year....and I thought the number was 21 mil.

2014: 12.5MM base + 9.9MM guaranteed = ~22.4MM cap hit
2015 (option): 3.5MM base + 9.7MM guaranteed = ~13.2MM cap hit

The guaranteed money is the dead money left on the contract which would still count against the cap if he were cut or traded.

Thanks. Never was big on cap issues.

From what I'm reading, if he's traded before June 1st, the 19 million counts against the cap in 2014. If he's traded after June 1st, the 9.7 will count against in 2014 and 9.7 in 2015.

his salary really isn't a problem. If he doesn't want an extension is a clear sign he wants to test FA. that would be the only reason to trade him cause I read if you franchise him his cap number floats to like 28 mil lol.

Found some more out about his contract, it basically breaks down like this (assuming no restructure)

Cap Hits

If Suh exercises his option in 2015
2014: $21,412,500
2015: $13,242,500

If Suh declines his option in 2015
2014: $21,412,500
2015: $9,737,500

If Suh is traded before June 1st, 2014
2014: $19,475,000
2015: None

If Suh is traded after June 1st, 2014
2014: $9,737,500
2015: $9,737,500

to be honest were not in THAT bad of position with Suh....we should be totally fine if he wants to just play it out. Only reason we should extend him now is if both parties decide they want to stick it out long term and can come to a reasonable agreement. Reasonable meaning hed still be the highest paid DT in the game but obviously wed get some cap relief. If he makes it clear he doesn't want to be here then it becomes tricky....cause if what I read was right then its almost impossible to franchise him so youd have to decide to trade him after June 1st or ride it out and see what happens in FA with the potential of getting nothing for him but a comp pick.

It's not too bad. If he restructures this off-season they'll be in good shape for next year and beyond, if he doesn't there won't be much room next season but plenty of room afterwards.

y not restructure? Burleson has said he is willing. maybe delmas too?

It depends who we can get this offseason. If we can get cheap, but capable replacements for both of them, I think the Lions will do it. Delmas had a mediocre season despite playing all 16 games. Depending on the coaching staff hired, Burleson might be replaced or asked to take the veteran's minimum.
