Correspondents Dinner

What is so laughable about the faux outrage is how the President of the US ...the fucking President has said so much worse about so many people, from fellow GOP candidates to members of the media and other Heads of State. He mocks women, defames minorities and calls countries "shitholes" with absolutely nothing in terms of consequences.

I've never watched one of these live before; I've only heard the clips later on.

Sarah Sanders is a big girl and she has chosen to put herself in the public eye. Just about every woman in political discourse has her appearance discussed; Hillary Clinton certainly did.

I remember when that one young lady Fukes or whatever her name was who was a student at Georgetown, I think, testified about birth control during pre-ACA discussion, and that asshole Rush Limbaugh called her a "slut."

There was a whole big magilla about that, and I remember I felt a little sorry for her, but I also thought, ya know, you put yourself in the public eye expressing a political position, you're gonna get comments from the peanut gallery.

I guess Michelle Wolf gave herself an out; "oh, no, Aunt Lydia is a turncoat to women that was the joke," and "oh, her perfect smoky eye was a compliment, the joke was about her lying..."

Well, maybe - but it's hard to imagine that she didn't realize it would come off as appearance shaming to many.

I don't think she gave herself an out; I don't think mocking her appearance was any part of the intent of the joke to begin with. But should she have realized her joke would be seen that way by some, probably...I guess. Neither joke really makes sense as an appearance joke. Aunt Lydia isn't a comically unattractive comparison in some way and perfect smokey eyes would only be funny if Sanders was known to overdo eye makeup, which she isn't to my knowledge. There's zero humor there. But you should probably assume some people are dumb and going to take things the wrong way if that's your profession.

Unless she did. If she did want to get in the news over these accusations, that would be some Trump level PR mastery and we should elect her President.

"punching down" is the best kind of humor... it's not funny when the bully gets punched back.

... or the bully's paid spokesperson, who knew damn well what she signed up for, and has no concern defending her boss' awful takes and attacks on other people.

I can tell really bad, Tammy Faye Bakker-like makeup jobs.

But in most cases, when I hear one woman mocking another's makeup, I'm like "uh, I will have to defer to your judgment on that."

Here, since Huckabee-Sanders is not good looking regardless, I'd defer to female judgment as to whether her makeup job is worth mockery or not.

Unfortunately, I don't think any women have ever posted in the politics section here, and probably for good reason.

I liked the line 'Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's lies. It's probably lies.' Other than that I was bored. I like offensive comedy, but she wasn't very funny. Most of what she said were things we already know, it wasn't that creative.

What is funny? Seeing the 'kids nowadays are weak, stop being offended by everything, toughen up, back in my day' crowd get all worked up and offended.

Right.

It's because we would body shame and appearance shame them.

I thought it was funny when she went after the press for being obsessed with Trump like they used to date and when on to talk about how much he helped all of their careers. "You helped create this monster and now you're profiting off him."
Also, I suspect she was intentional (but most people missed it) about saying 'goodnight' waiting just long enough for everyone to start clapping, and then she said "Flint still doesn't have clean water" and the camera cuts to people smiling and clapping.

She's right about this.

When Trump first announced his candidacy, to use an idiom I've used before about this, they were all tripping over their dicks to give him free face time on TV.

I felt she was mainly going after the media. She went after Trump, because that's what everyone wanted, and even involved the audience. Then she went after dems a little to placate anyone that needed that. But then she finished with the media and the bit about getting everyone to clap about Flint not having clean water. The blow she wanted to land was directed at the media.

And that's the whole point of her roast/routine - it wasn't insulting SHS for her awful wardrobe decisions or for the fact that she looks like her Dad in drag with a wig - it was a slam on the media and the interaction with the media.

What's so puzzling is the incredible level of irony and hypocrisy. We have the most narcissistic person in history occupying the White House. He is obsessed with media and the coverage of him and his ego and his ...appearance, period. I posted at the time how a NY Times Mag writer spent a week on the road with candidate Trump. He said all he did on his plane and in the evenings was flip around cable news channels looking for coverage of ... him.

So it didn't matter if it was CNN or MSNBC or Fox, when a segment on him ended and the network moved on to whatever it was covering next, he turned the channel until he found a channel covering him.

And Repeat.

So this WHCD was never a thing before; it was never covered or made to be a public topic until Trump got lampooned by Seth Meyers and again by Obama. The seething hatred Trump has towards Obama is no doubt partially basic racism - Trump is a racist. But it's also resentment towards the jokes told at his expense.

The guy and his Admin is obsessed with itself on the one hand, but on the other has the audacity to deny basic facts - eg. the size of the crowd at his inauguration - and chalk it up to "Fake News" and some "Deep State" conspiracy. Frankly, if the PC simply stopped showing up for SHS altogether and left her speaking to an empty room and TV cameras, I think it would piss him off to no end.

But instead, the irony marches on. "Filthy" comedian from some "shithole" country of origin (no doubt, just look at her!) dares to criticize the quite obvious dishonesty of the current Admin and she is in the wrong...?

Nope. Just stooping ever so slightly down to Trump's level.
