Dantonio retires!

Whoa! Why’d he wait so long?

I really hope Fickell considers the job but when I talked to his brother this fall he didn’t think it was very likely - he uprooted his family from C’bus to Cincinnati and now he has kids in high school. Has six kids and I think 2 of them are in HS. But he also said he hasnt talked to him about changing jobs in over a year and he almost never talks to him during football season bc he is basically working all the time.

If Fickell wants to coach in the B1G, this may be his best shot for a long time. Day isn’t going anywhere, neither is Harbaugh or Franklin probably. Crist seems pretty well set. I’d be surprised if he would rather hold out for Iowa, Illinois, Rutgers, MD...

This has a running from something feeling to me. Hope I'm wrong but it just gives me a weird vibe.

Wish he wouldn't have waited so long but maybe he really thought he was coming back. I think he did a good job making the program relevant again. Had some down years but had some great seasons also.

from the ESPN article.

Dantonio -- along with Michigan State's athletic director and university president -- said he expected to stay with the team at the conclusion of the 2019 football season. He collected a $4.3 million retention bonus in the middle of January.

27-24 over the last 4 seasons with no change in sight along with allegations of multiple NCAA violations. Dude had no reason to stay.

Fickell has done fine at Cincinnati, but kinda had a "deer in the headlights" look about him during his interim year at OSU. I wonder if he's up to the challenge? It's often a lot easier to succeed when there are lower standards & expectations.

also, unlike the Ohio sports media, which are more like Ohio Cheerleaders, the media in Michigan actually does their job and are more critical of dumb football coaches. He better get prepped for that.

hahaha, they let him just walk away with $4.3 million like that? How the fuck....???

That was my guess. Thanks.

That?s how contracts work, you commit to something then you honor it. Maybe if you went to law school, you?d know something about that.

What allegations, is there something that hasn?t been investigated? The Curtis Blackwell thing is still hanging over his head but even if he was wrongfully dismissed, that?s not an NCAA violation.

I agree with the rest though. My guess is he wanted to retire in 2yrs and saw that it was gonna take 4 to dig the program out of the current rut so what?s the point in taking the hit to his record? Take the dough, save your ticket the wear and tear and ride off into the sunset.

Yeah, I heard Harbaugh almost turned down the Michigan job because of Drew Sharp. Jeez, you say some stupid shit.

Harbaugh seems to have adapted well to it.

Some new stuff apparently came out according to a few local sites this morning. To be fair, I haven't followed it much at all so I don't know how groundbreaking it is.

I guess Blackwell is accusing him of NCAA violations as part of his wrongful dismissal suit. Seems odd, but possible. Not sure what kind of NCAA violations Dantonio would be guilty of that he wasn't also complicit in, given his role in recruiting and player development.

If the accusations are true I wonder if there are any clawback provisions in his contract for NCAA violations.
