Get StartedHouston wasn't better than anyone in the league last year. I do think we have enough depth that it shouldn't be an immediate need unless you get a chance to better the position like Gilbert would. We have enough mediocre corners and more pressing needs.
You're arguing about a piece of liver and a piece of liver with ketchup on it. They still both taste like shit..
But they were both filet mignon in 2011 and 2012. Houston's ability is not set in stone based on 2013. This is what the Houston haters fail to realize. With 2 years of good play and 2010 was solid, plus some injury factors in 2013, I'd say it's more than likely Houston rebounds than not.
I like Slay's skillset too. He's a high round 2 pick. I'll give him a year before I toss him in the garbage pile. His final 2 games (GB and at Min) were actually good too despite his benchings early in the season and early at Chicago (Marshall and Jefferey are tough).
I have way more faith in both those guys in 2014 than a rookie Gilbert saving us. Gilbert would be a great long term pick but 2014, it's Houston and Slay or bust. And even with Gilbert (assuming he earns the starting job over Houston and Slay), we're still relying on one of Houston or Slay on the other side.
How do you know this? I suppose no CB ever is good enough to start year one..? It's freakin' Houston not Champ Bailey..
Houston set the bar high in 2011 and 2012. History suggests Houston is more good than bad and rookie CBs struggles. I like Gilbert but he's not saving this secondary as a rookie. Might not even win a starting job.

Ravens are no longer competing for James Ihedigbo. Three teams interested, but the Ravens are no longer in the mix.
gilbert is long and athletic. Houston is not long and fast. When you have guys like Jimmy Graham in the league now you need corners that are closer to the gilbert mold than the Houston mold. Houston effs up his footwork all the time and relies on his speed to make up for it. I don't expect ANY cb to come in and be all pro anymore....theres just too much of an adjustment. Heck even Patrick Peterson was viewed as a poor corner his first year and a half. But if you NEED to improve in the secondary than you shouldn't keep rolling out the same guys year after year. If its a major focus for mayhew to improve the secondary than the choice should be gilbert and Houston should be cut next year.
Here is your prediction from the mind of Ink:
Lions get Suh under a new contract next week, freeing up 13 million in cap space. They trade a 2014 7th round pick to Philly for DeSean Jackson, and then draft Justin Gilbert in the 1st round.
Gilbert signs a 3 year extension bringing his cap number down to about 6M for this season, and after that the Lions sign Ihedigbo and Hill.

especially when you spend all your money on 1 guy....makes it literally impossible to EVER fill your holes when you spend all your money on 1 guy. Only dummies spend all their money on 1 starter when they have holes everywhere and major depth concerns.
we have 1 new starter on our team. you can try to justify it however you want. we still have 1 new starter on our team and not enough cap space to sign our draft picks.
Not enough money to sign draft picks? Are you serious? lol
yes...
