Detroit Lions FA Thread

Hughes cmon man you don't know about the rookie salary cap and you really don't think we would be able to sign them? LOL But you know all.....

"This is an oft misunderstood number, because while it is part of the team’s Salary Cap, it does not have a dollar-for-dollar impact on the team’s overall Salary Cap. The Rookie Salary Cap is often referred to as “a cap within a cap” because it limits the amount that teams can allocate to their rookies in the year they were drafted. But, beyond that, there is a lot of confusion about the Rookie Salary Cap and exactly how it works."

who said I don't know about the rookie salary cap?

You'll never get it....i know. WR was a major need, MAJOR. Signing a shitload of FAs doesn't guarantee you anything. They'll probably land a starting Safety in FA anyways and you build through the draft.

youll never get it cause ur a blind homer. rotoworld I think is fair to say is one of the least biased sites and is known for telling it how it is has updated ever teams salary cap. Heres what they wrote about us:

31 (notice were ranked 31). Detroit Lions

Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $2.6 million

GM’s on the hot seat don’t always exhibit rational thinking. So while Detroit's long-term cap scenario is unsettling for Lions fans, it is not Martin Mayhew's chief concern—he won’t be around to deal with the consequences if the Lions fail to make the playoffs in 2014. The signing of Golden Tate, whose $3.1 million 2014 cap hit gradually increases over the life of this deal, will only contribute to the Lions future cap issues. But Tate is a playmaker—the type of player who might save Martin Mayhew’s job.

After re-signing Brandon Pettigrew and bringing in former Redskin Darryl Tapp, Detroit has exhausted its 2014 spending money. Mayhew could create some more space by extending Ndamukong Suh, whose current 2014 cap number is a whopping $22,412,500.

so in short....we have an irrational GM trying to save his ass and hes doing so while being 31st out of 32 in cap space. This after basically getting nothing out of FA...the team is basically the same as last year and can easily be argued as worse. Minus Burleson delmas young....add tate.

base salaries don't need to fit under the cap but signing bonuses do. Depending on how many picks you have you typically need about 2 mil in room. If were serious about signing a safety....we don't have enough money under the cap to sign our draft picks as the roster currently stands.

We call that the "Joe Dumars special".

We can create more cap space without much future hurt or extend suh.mJumping the gun on this assessment that we aren't better. Free agency and the draft far from over. Jason Jones the true starter originally replaces young and Tate is an upgrade over burleson. Ihedigbo or Clemons can play better than Delmas. All three upgrades plus a draft. Not to mention coaching

One of your favorite excuses was injuries. While you were right that the Lions had some to starters (no more than any other team) the problem with the Lions is the lack of depth. They have 6 picks in this draft. The depth issue is not going to be changed.

that wasn't the point. his point was he was trying to throw me under the bus assuming I didn't know what cap within a cap meant. he was mistaken....and kmd and tony proved they didn't really understand it either and assumed we can just sign all our draft picks with no consequence to our cap space. That is not the case...

now as far as your analysis of us being better. I like to live in the now.....right now we aren't better and we have no cap room to get any better. If that situation stays static were looking at needing 3 or 4 of our picks to come in and start....again. If they hit on the draft....ill be all for it. This teams needs an influx of cheap talent to balance all the mega contracts that underperform. You can live in the "broyles will contribute" future all you want....ill stay in the real world.

IFFFF they hit on the draft and create space to sign quality depth or any combination of safety/DE than ill applaud them then. Not so sure they deserve applause for still being one of the worst teams to manage their cap....but ill applaud them nonetheless.

its easy to get 5 mill if they need it.convert some portion of base salaries to signing bonuses

signing bonuses still hit the cap unless youre prorating them across the term of the contract. In that case youre making an already ugly cap situation in the near future...worse. Like the rotoworld article states....mayhew probably doesn't care about 2-3 years down the line anyways so that's what he'll probably do.

We are better at de wr and coaching. But worse temporarily at safety. Vet safety and draft for wr and db for future. This team is already better not worse. Jones is the true starter, Tate is an upgrade and burleson only played 9 games on top of that. Calvin fixed some things with surgery too. Much better at wr. Not to mention growth in year 2 of oline and rookie tes. Much better

And I know the 2015 numbers already. They are just fine. Mayhew didn't screw anything

it can change with the right moves. won't be fixed overnight but it can be better

With your logic every other team will be better too. All of their rookies from last year will develop equally.

This team is no better off now than they were at the end of the season. They got a little bump with Tate but still don't have a safety. We don't know that the new safety will be any better than Delmas. They haven't addressed the most glaring weakness which is depth. Of course they will fix that with their abundance of draft picks!
