Detroit Lions FA Thread

So we should have kept Schwartz and saved the Lions money in your eyes?? Or did you want him gone?? Is it your money anyways?? lol. Your hatred is so deep you don't even know what you want.

Like Ink said, Mayhew did not want Schwartz extended but the Fords did. Mayhew loses that battle everytime. He's not the boss.

Why do you think Mayhew wanted to fire him a year after he was extended? Because he didn't trust him Are you that fn stupid?

its just yet another example of how ass backwards are franchise is. Its really a joke amongst a lot of national media. A real team doesn't extend a coach and put in guaranteed money for being blown the fuck out in a playoff game we were lucky as hell to get to. Now....you guys are speculating that mayhew didn't want to extend him since that has never once came out of his mouth. But lets go ahead and say its true.....what fucking idiot says he wants to fire him a year later when he knows how much it would cost the franchise? Keep that shit in house and atleast pretend like you know what the fuck youre doing....

I don't know what happened but I was always under the impression GMs deal with coaches. I suppose Ford Jr. could have put pressure on Mayhew..who knows.

they do....they hire and fire coaches....I never heard any of this. Actually the only thing I have heard is the opposite.....how hands off WCF was the last couple years and he was more of a glorified fan more than anything else.

GMs deal with owners you mean?? Of course they do!!!

Keep what in house??? Mayhew didn't want him back!! What aren't you understanding about this?? You're acting like the Lions are the only team in history that has had to eat a contract before. Coaches get fired allllll the time and get huge buyouts.

GMs interview hire and fire coaches....tonys been drinking again lol.

No shit?? lol. But the owner will have that last call on anything. Why the hell do you think Jerry Jones won't hire a GM??? Because it's his call!! We all know it's assbackwards but it's his team..lol. He doesn't want to have anything to do with the middleman.

so now we have our starting safety, what's next? i say bringing back Hill or getting a vet #2 to replace him

The amount of power given to the GM depends on the team. I would imagine many GMs lack the power to fire/hire head coaches all on their own, they need to consult with ownership first (Mayhew is probably one). In some cases, the GM and head coach are probably near equals. Look at Tampa Bay, Lovie Smith probably has more power than whatever GM they hired.

if they don't pick up a vet in the next few weeks it will have to be the Draft and like you said 4th or later.

Sure they do. You can sign all kinds of players but you have to be under by a certain date. And no, I don't know the date lol

You have to be under by the start of free agency and if you go over, you have to get back under like the next day.

Luke McCown would not be costly. A vet min like that won't change the cap more than 100-200K. Depends on the vet min deduction rule too they could use.

Get McCown and draft one in Round 4. Kick Kellen Moore to the curb.

They need a backup in there that can win games. Luke McCown can not provide that.

I dont see a FA #2 vet QB leading us if Stafford goes down for any long period of time. If he were to be out for a long time, the season would be a wash and i think the team would benefit more in drafting and developing one. Brian Xander has done a better job in evaluating talent in one year that i can say I have ever seen since the late 80's. If he has a year like last evaluating talent he will be long gone next year.....unless we make him our GM.
