Again, Mayhew did not want to extend Schwartz. The Ford family wanted the coach extended after the playoffs in 2011 because they wanted to "brand" him, the way several other teams have marketed their coach as the "face of the franchise".

Mayhew was not all out against Schwartz, but he wasn't sold on him either.

It's bad ownership making these calls bro, not the GM. Mayhew has messed up plenty (Mike Thomas ring a bell folks?) so he has more than his fair share of blame without laying what the Fords ordered at his feet too.

Never heard of an owner chosing to extend an entire coaching staff without the blessing of the gm. Ever....

Regardless....knowing mayhew tried to fire him with that buyout is proof enough to me that hes an idiot and doesn't belong a gm.

Need another clue...lions are the only team in the nfl to lose money. And we've done it going on 5 years straight lol.

Clearly. It was sooooo right he fired him 2 years later, cost the team millions and the team is now a bunch of undisciplined overpaid 7 win bums.

Like Ink said, Mayhew did not want Schwartz extended but the Fords did. Mayhew loses that battle everytime. He's not the boss.

I don't know what happened but I was always under the impression GMs deal with coaches. I suppose Ford Jr. could have put pressure on Mayhew..who knows.
