Detroit Lions FA Thread

This might give you a better look at what is considered a deep pass and how well it is or isn't thrown by a given QB.

Stafford ranks 19th overall in the percentage of deep passes (which the author uses the normal 20 yards or further mark) that are either caught or dropped.

Now, that doesn't sound very good on the surface....

Until you take into account that his percentage is about 10% less than the #1 QB in the league... oddly enough Russell Wilson, who's 52.4% average is what the author describes as "unreal".

Also, you may note that according to this chart, Stafford is more accurate on the deep throw than Brady, Ryan, RGIII, and even Cutler who's percentage of attempts is in the top 10.

This chart makes it clear that Stafford is fairly good on the deep pass considering the difference in completion percentage between him at the top ten in less than 3% variable, but his attempts are 5% fully less.

basically, it shows what I suspect, that he can hit the deep throw, but Linehan doesn't call it very often. In fact, Stafford was allowed to attempt the deep throw even less than Sam Bradford or E.J. Manuel or Geno Smith, who are neither known for the big throw or have the years in the league for their O-Coordinators to rely on their arms for big throws.

Stafford was held back quite a bit from going deep these last few years, and while his accuracy on deep throws is not elite, it appears from the charts here like he's certainly not bad, and he should be allowed to go deep more often rather than less.

Okay. Goes with my first assumption, he dinks and dunks. I probably just stop at the "Stafford ranks 19th overall in the percentage of deep passes (which the author uses the normal 20 yards or further mark) that are either caught or dropped."

I think that's what my eyes see. I did see him miss that deep throw late in the season quite regular. Or so it seems. But if I'm wrong I'm wrong.

There needs to be some chemistry between the qb and wr on the deep ball and with injures that just never happened. Our only deep threat was CJ and for the most part was doubled. Now he did make some catches that helped out Staffords numbers, but i remember him hitting Ogletree in stride on a beautiful throw.

Oh Russel Wilson is unreal. They defend Seattles run game all day long. Easy to throw it deep with less coverage. Detroit they are afraid of Calvin and know Stafford can get it to him so they play two deep safety all day. Context is very important.

Cincy game for Ogletree, Durham Cowboy game, Ogeltree again Pittsburgh game (but Ogletree dropped it).

cant go dep when the furthest route ran is 7 yards. Linehan ruined this offense last year. Could have been from lingering CJ injuries. But the bottom line is we had no deep threat even available to stretch the field. We quickly turned one of the scariest weapons in the NFL into a possession WR.

The Lions run game was 22nd in the league in yards per rush & 17th in total yards with no safeties playing the run? And you say the Lions have Super Bowl talent on the offensive line and star running backs.

context isn't very important when he has guys wide open down the field and misses them.

THIS is all that needs to be said. 100% correct. Calvin became a possession receiver last season.

Screw Linehan.

That "possession" receiver averaged 17.8 yards/reception last year. 3rd best in the NFL.

Possession guys don't do that.

Calling Calvin Johnson a possession receiver in any context.....be it in a particular offense, or overall....shows a real lack of football knowledge.

His 11.82 YATC average in 2013 was actually BETTER than his 11.72 from 2012.

Lions sign offensive lineman J.B. Shugarts

The Lions have signed an offensive lineman who’s gained some NFL experience in the last two years.

The club has added former Jets, Cowboys and Browns lineman J.B. Shugarts, according to the NFL’s Thursday transactions.

The 24-year-old Shugarts signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent in May 2012 and had a brief stint on the club’s practice squad during the 2012 regular season. He spent part of the 2013 offseason with the Cowboys but was waived in July. Shugarts spent the 2013 preseason with the Jets before being waived in the cut down to 53 players.

Shugarts (6-6, 305) has appeared in a combined eight preseason games in the last two seasons. He played collegiately at Ohio State, starting three seasons at right tackle.

fortunately those that have "real football knowledge" and actually watch the games encompass the entirety of the situation and not JUST when he catches the ball. Which is only just above half of his targets. Theres 72 more chances out there that were incomplete. So saying JUST where hes catching the ball isn't telling the whole story. After the dallas game there was an blantently obvious difference on how we were using calvin if you actually watched the games. I mentioned it could have ben due to injury....but regardless, a good majority of his routes were underneath typically on quick slants. Which is why we stated linehan turned him into a "possession WR."

No, you're just wrong. Even when hurt, he was running primarily intermediate routes.

The numbers and the game tape back me up.....you're just arguing to argue now. Look at the Baltimore game.....he dropped 2 balls that day.....both 20+ yards downfield .....both probably would have been TD. He was running deep routes even late in the season....injury or not.

(Quick side note.....took my son to that Monday night game.....his first Lions game. Stunned silence in Ford Field after those drops. Just silence. My son looks at me and says "dad, why doesn't he just catch those"?

I offer no response.

"I would have caught 'em".

He probably would have. He's 8.)

To be honest I don't care if we become a dink and dump or straight deep team as long as we move the ball and score. As much as I say about $tafford, I'm much more worried about the defense. I think I like our new DC so I'm hoping we improve big time.

Lions sign CB Cassius Vaughn to a 1 year deal. Started 15 games the last 2 years for Indy
