Detroit Lions FA Thread

I like the move, but how many CBs do we have on the roster now? Slay, Houston, Mathis, Bentley, Green, Greenwood, Cassius Vaughn. That's the 7 I can think of off the top of my head. I'd guess this guarantees we're not taking Gilbert at 10, which I'm a little disappointed about since I have no idea who else we'd take at 10. And I'm not real excited about moving up unless we're able to keep our 2nd round pick.

Well, I guess I was wrong again. I really didn't see Mathis coming back when they have been signing every corner they can find at the bottom of the trash can.

Never can have too many corners. Plus, you can always let someone go later on. Cassius Vaughn for example.

I'd much rather see Greenwood gone than Vaughn.

Vaughn has started some games, and wasn't abused.

Greenwood has never gotten over his case of boo-boo-belly. He went to Dallas last season, and did exactly what he's done here, nothing.

His measurables are incredibly, but I'd rather have the known commodity in Vaughn than the "maybe he will eventually develop" in Greenwood.

You're right. Greenwood has been nothing more than "potential hope". I'd still like a CB in round one or two.

I would still be happy with Keith McGill in round 2-3, but i just don't see it happening at this point. Re-signing Mathis, who played very well, in my mind says they will not target CB in the draft unless one really falls into their laps.

If Darqueze Dennard falls into round 2, for some strange reason, and is there... sure, they will take a grab at that. But I don't think CB will be a priority on their board at this point.

You have your projected starters in Houston/Slay. You Have your projected nickel in Bentley. You have your backup/rotational guys in Vaughn/Mathis. And two developmental guys (one of which will be cut at least) in Green/Greenwood to push each other and the veterans.

Sounds like a pretty complete secondary to me. Maybe not the best in the league, but one any coach would hope could compete.

Now there are three questions in Detroit concerning the CBs....

#1 Will Houston recover from last year's problems, injury related or otherwise?
#2 Will spending an offseason with Rod Woodson help Slay develop faster?
#3 Is Rasheen Mathis for real? He played very well last season, can he do it again?

I guess I don't want a passable secondary I want a real good one. I think Gilbert would be huge down the line. But Mayhew seems to like what we have so he probably won't go corner. Just not sure how I'd like trading up to get Watkins..he would help but I think we need more. Going DE, LB in round one and two would be nice as well.

I feel the exact same way. I'd like a knockout secondary, not a passable one. I would be thrilled with Gilbert at #10, but I am not sure how he fits in at this point, or if he will even have much playing time year one.

I can't lie and say I wouldn't be super excited to see Watkins in a Lions uniform, but I am also concerned about the cost in going up to get him. The Lions transparency with him has been a mistake. Every teams knows they are infatuated with him, and they will be looking to fleece us in a trade.

Just imagining Megatron, Tate, and Watkins together is enough to give me wood, but then I wonder if the cost is worth it.

I'd be stoked as well but there are a couple-three I'd be stoked at 10. Plus we'd have our 2nd round pick. As far as positions go I don't see WR as a position you trade up for. You might not get a Watkins but there other nice receivers later in the draft. But I want defensive guys..DE, CB, LB and a S.

also have to realize that there's a possibility that Mayhew (et all) doesn't think that Gilbert is worth it at 10. i'm not fully sold on Gilbert at the top of the draft either. i think he'll be nothing more than a good CB in the future, instead of the being a perennial pro-bowler or all-pro.

i think that Keith McGill or Stanley Jean-Baptiste will be just as good as Gilbert, if not better when all things are said and done (3-5 years from now).

all things said, i want a lock down secondary as much as the next guy, but i'm ok with passable for this year if it means taking the better CB next year

You're probably right about Mayhew. It's no secret that he likes his secondary but you really don't know about these young kids, Watkins could turn into Charles Rogers..unlikely but I still don't like trading up for a WR, not when we have more needs.

i never said anything about trading up. i would prefer to stand pat at 10 myself, but i'm not going to hate on a move to trade up either. i just don't get all the man love for Gilbert at 10. he's no PP, and i think he may not even be as good as Mo Claiborne... but that's just my opinion.

I know that the scouts all seem to agree that Gilbert is an amazing corner and I have seen nothing at all about his game to refute that.

Yes, I see a lot of posters on here playing the Scout at Home Draft Game... which we ALL do... but all I see is "I don't think he's as good as advertised". Not a single thing to back it up, just a gut hunch.... which we've all had.

Until I see something solid that says this guy won't be a start CB in the NFL, I'm going to listen to the scouts.

Anddddddddd we resign Mathis for a year.... Highly doubt we go CB round 1.

that doesn't prove anything dude

The only thing that PROVES what we do in the draft is the final pick we make in round seven.

However, you illiterate twit, he said he highly DOUBTS that we go CB in round 1. He never said there was no possibility of it.

I see your link, and raise you a link:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000341251/article/jadeveon-clowney-to-visit-with-detroit-lions

Now, do you think we have a shot at drafting Clowney?

Teams look at any player they can before the draft. Posting a link saying Dennard worked out for the Lions as proof they may still draft a CB is like me posting a photo of the Pope to prove there is a god.

It's retarded corollary evidence at best, and ridiculous logic at worst.
