Detroit Lions FA Thread

3rd down stop % was incredible last year....i dont remember the last time we were even remotely that good at stops on 3rd downs. With that said due to the inability of our cb's to play bump and run teams were killing us with short routes. I think Houston is an average starting cb's but we need an overhall. These Cb's are too small to effectually play close up on bigger wr's. The smaller size is causing injuries.

Slay, Greenwood and Green are bigger CBs. Bentleys size is fine in the slot. Houston is 5'11 and was hurt last year on top of his 4 games missed. I think they'll add a CB in the draft at some point but alot is Slay and Bentley developing. These are 2nd and 3rd round picks in year 2 and 3. Time to shine. It's hard to be patient but they have talent. We'll see if Gilbert is there at 10 and how a rookie CB would fare.

Sorry i meant strength not size

No it didn't....I just thought it was stupid. I think it was my response that went over yours.

we are used to seeing "ugly girls" as Lions QBs...that is why Stafford looks good. I think it was a good analogy.

Your response seemed more like a personal attack which is fine.....I can handle it.

Detroit had 15 ints in total pass defense. 15 was average. Slay and Bentley do need to pick more balls off in 2014 since they had zero. But they aren't talentless CBS. They are young and developing.

Wright and Smith had 8 in 2011. But they suck and just gambled.

Oh, you said the secondary was average in INTs but you are including the INTs by the LBs. To be fair the secondary was probably close to the bottom of the league in INTs.

Should have clarified pass defense. Last time I checked Tulloch and Levy will be in coverage this year too.

Rams agreed to terms with QB Shaun Hill, formerly of the Lions, on a one-year contract.
Hill, 34, visited the Rams in free agency's opening week and was always expected to sign with St. Louis. He makes his offseason home just a couple hours from St. Louis. Hill has attempted just 16 passes the past three seasons but boasts a 13-13 career record and an 85.9 passer rating. He'll run the first-team offense for however long Sam Bradford (ACL) is sidelined this spring.

Defense doesn't suck at everything. Getting stops rather good actually. First in league 3rd down stop %. They were middle of the pack with 15 ints. It's that pesky bad bounce fumble recovery rate (only 7 recovered). Plus some defensive injuries in Ansah, Houston and Bentley. Mathis, Slay and Bentely all have talent but need to force more turnovers plus get normal recovery rates.

You were complaining about being the worst in starting field position...thats a direct result of poor defense.

Stafford is good just compared to other Lions QBs and the current league.
6th in passing TDs, 4th in yards, 12th in YPA and 4th in 3rd down conversion all while having to drive longer fields than all QBs thanks to less turnovers than 20 other teams. Detroit only had 1 drive start inside the opponents 20 all year. Teams like Seattle get 6 or 7 of those. That's about a 2 PPG swing right there.

Stafford is underrated with the focus on his comp % without factoring the drops (3% higher than the league). And 12 fumbles lost by other players is 12 lost drives not Staffords fault. Throw in some Akers misses in there as well (Cards/Bengals games). the 10 picks in 9 losses sucks but there were plenty of good things by Stafford. He carried us to 7 wins and kept us competitive in most of the 9 losses.

right...but we were talking specifically about the secondary. I do think Slay will improve but I have my doubts about Houston. That is why I want them to take Gilbert.

Not getting turnovers is only stat in many for a defense. And really it's the fumbles (only 7). Some of that is luck. They do plenty of other things right on defense.

So rookie Gilbert the number 1 CB and Slay the number 2 with Houston in the slot. I'd be interested to see if that ever happens and how they would perform.

Honestly Nothing personal....just think a large portion of hating on Stafford is ignorant. Typical Lions "fanatics" have no idea why the team actually loses and put most if not all the blame on the qb and/or coach or the oldest excuse the owner "RIP".

I really don't hate Stafford....I just think he is average. Most of the losses last season were a team effort but it is hard not to put a lot of the blame on the QB when he shits the bed. That is the nature of the beast....when they win they get all of the glory and when they lose they catch hell.

The man moves the ball and scores alot of points with not alot of help (WR injuries, drops, other player fumbles, longer fields to go). And the running game wasn't there for him every game. In fact, at Zona, at GB, Bengals, at Pit (Bush), Giants, at Minnesota, the Lions didn't run the ball very well. Bucs game and Ravens game they did but the Bucs game (Durham and Calvin really screwed him in the 4th Quarter despite his early pick problems).

Its very true but if best receiver is running at 75% and then you have no one else to throw too whats a guy to do. I think the better core of wr's we have the better Stafford plays...pretty much like every qb in the league. Take Flacco....i dont think hes better or worse than stafford and he won a SB. Take away targets takes away from getting the most out of your qb and it leave a lot of room for error.

that is so true. Stafford is just not a top 10 quarterbacks. is horrible? no he is not. he has incredible arm strength, tough as nails, and shows glimpses of being spectacular. but the real I test is in the consistency. Russell Wilson is a great example. is he a top 10 quarterbacks? probably not, but he's darn close. he has on field intelligence and if Stafford was smart he may want to study that particular strength of Wilson's. gunslingers win games but they end up losing about the same amount. Stafford is just out there slinging it most of the time from what I see. take Calvin Johnson from him and I guarantee his numbers look quite a bit different. in defense of Stafford, the last coaching staff definitely did not know how to game plan. we also were unable to give him another one or two targets. I have quarterbacked and I can tell you having 3 receivers verses one is huge. personnel falls on the GM in the Lions case.

Agreed. And Calvin when Calvin missed 2, he was also missing Burleson or Pettigrew in each game, Burleson missed 7, Broyles 8 and the run game was junk in alot of losses.

In fact, 7 of 9 losses the run game was junk. Blame him for the Bucs and Ravens losses all you want with 7 picks in 2 games but there were a ton of factors in those 7 other losses.

Russel Wilson on Detroit would suck forced to carry a team. The guy lives off defensive turnovers and a run game. Wilson can run I'll give him that. Most overrated QB in the league, Russel Wilson.

easy to do with a starting record the likes of Stafford....

You think peyton, brees, brady, Rodgers had stellar defenses all these years? the answer is no....not even close.

sCam Newton is the most over rated... Wilson has always been a solid QB (NC State, Wiscy and now the Hawks), never spectacular, but also never losing games.
