Detroit Lions - Team Notes

The 2015-2018 Lions draft comparison continues. In 2015: OL Laken Tomlinson in Round 1; RB Ameer Abdullah in Round 2; DB Alex Carter in Round 3; DL Gabe Wright in Round 4.
In 2018: OL Frank Ragnow in Round 1; RB Kerryon Johnson in Round 2; DB Tracy Walker in Round 3; DL Da'Shawn Hand in Round 4. The 2015 draft was an epic bust for the Lions. They are clearly hoping (with a different GM and head coach) that 2018 isn't the same.

114. Detroit Lions: Da?Shawn Hand, DE, Alabama
Detroit traded up to land this pick and they get a ton of upside. Hand had all of the hype coming into Tuscaloosa, but never lived up to it. Now he?ll try to realize that potential in the Motor City.
Grade: B

153. Detroit Lions: Tyrell Crosby, OT, Oregon
Great pick. He?s a Round 3 talent and the Lions need offensive line depth. This is just a fantastic move for them.

Awards: Numerous in his career. It started as a freshman with the Ducks Pancake Award for putting the most defenders on the ground.
More important was the Morris Trophy as the Pac-12 offensive lineman of the year in 2017, as voted on by the conference’s opposing defensive linemen.
“Bottom line: This is a high-value pick for the Lions. Crosby was rated as high as a second-round prospect.”

2018 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions land OT Tyrell Crosby in the fifth round.

ANALYSIS: Likely becoming the Lions’ new swing tackle, Crosby played both right and left tackle at Oregon. He also has the ability to move inside to guard if needed. This is a player many analysts had rated much higher than the fifth round, so Detroit finds themselves another gem here.

Crosby can come in Day One and compete for the starting left guard spot, but regardless adds quality depth to the depth chart who could play a more significant role in time. His addition was important considering the injuries suffered by this offensive line in Detroit last season.

Suddenly, the Lions offensive line is stocked with talent with rookies like Crosby and Ragnow being added to a room with veterans Taylor Decker, T.J. Lang, Ricky Wagner and Graham Glasgow.

His pass blocking efficiency was, well, perfect in 2017. He did not allow a single quarterback hit or sack. Oregon’s quarterbacks are an athletic bunch, so don’t get too excited, but that is still an impressive feat. Crosby has a tendency to lean on his opponent and may have difficulty with veteran speed rushers who use his own momentum against him with secondary inside moves.

Crosby hits like a truck, his punch is incredible, and that may serve him well if the team intends to forego an attempt to keep him outside. The fallback position for Crosby is at guard. His main mechanical difficulty moving inside is that his feet tend to go dead when he impacts an opponent. If he overcomes that deficiency, he is a valuable asset.

2018 NFL draft: Lions use final pick on San Diego State fullback Nick Bawden.
Mlive

The Lions had eliminated the fullback under Jim Bob Cooter in recent years, but are amidst a total overhaul of their run game. They drafted tailback Kerryon Johnson in the second round, signed LeGarrette Blount in free agency and hired Jeff Davidson to retool the blocking concepts.

Everything's going to be different in 2018. And that includes bringing back the fullback.

The moves are in reaction to Detroit falling back into last place in rushing for the second time in three years. They were especially bad in short-yardage situations, too, moving the chains just 45 percent of the time on third- and fourth-and short. That was worst in the league.

They also had 27 percent of their runs dropped behind the line of scrimmage, which was 31st.

Some of that was on the blocking, of course, and general manager Bob Quinn tried to address that by adding prized interior lineman Frank Ragnow in the first round of the draft. But a lack of physicality in the backfield hurt too.

So the Lions signed Blount, who remains one of the best power backs in the league. And now they've brought back the fullback to help protect him.

A CLOSER LOOK: Fullback Nick Bawden.

Lead blocker, draft follower: Penny, who rushed for 2,248 yards with Bawden helping lead the way, was drafted 27th overall by the Seattle Seahawks. That was 2,201 more yards gained in his career than by Bawden, who was drafted 210 picks after Penny.

Analysts take: An unidentified scout from Bobmcginnfootball.com: “He’s a little bit of a throwback. Just a tough guy. Also has some skill out of the backfield. He’s really tough.”

Mike O’Hara’s take: “The Lions eliminated the fullback from the offense last year. Drafting Bawden means they’re either returning the fullback to the offense, or they like Bawden’s toughness enough to think he can help on special teams, or perhaps learn another position. Time will tell.”

Tim Twentyman’s take: “Bob Quinn really wasn’t kidding when he said he wanted to bolster the run game. The team added an interior offensive lineman, running back and now fullback. The Lions didn’t have a fullback on the roster after releasing Michael Burton last season. The seventh round is a good spot to fill a position of need that fits the value in this case. Bawden led the way for the nation’s top two rushers in 2016 and 2017.”

Rather than employing a linebacker who has never done the job, the Lions have chosen the path of employing a qualified professional. The mistakes of the past are being rectified. Jeff Davidson has been brought in to replace Prince. The team has signed and drafted a plethora of offensive linemen and running backs.

The Detroit Lions have learned that while the NFL is a passing league, the good teams can run the ball when they have to. Denial of comeback opportunities matters. Winning the time of possession battle matters. Limiting the number of snaps that your 300 lb defensive linemen have to play in a season matters. The team cannot rely on Matthew Stafford to drag them kicking and screaming to every victory.

It’s clear that the Detroit Lions want to be a tough-nose rushing team in 2018. That, after struggling in short-yardage situations last season. Beefing up their offensive line, adding tough runners like LeGarrette Blount and Kerryon Johnson plus a fullback in Nick Bawden should vastly improve what was one of the worst areas on the team last season.
