Detroit Lions - Team Notes

With Michael Roberts still out, Hakeem Valles again getting some first-team work including a nice catch from a Matthew Stafford pass in 11-on-11. Still early, but he's going to be worth watching in camp.

Could be the start of a competition at corner as Nevin Lawson is getting some first-team reps over DeShawn Shead. Lawson had the job last year but Shead had been running with the first team most of camp.

Devon Kennard did his first real work of training camp Thursday. While he wasn't with the first team defense in most of the team drills I saw (Alex Barrett was still out there) he did do other work, including splitting with tackle Rick Wagner on a couple of one-on-one offensive-defensive lineman reps. Kennard said Wednesday he didn't think it would take him long to get back up to speed.

Noticed Kerry Hyder a bit more today as well. He's coming off an Achilles injury that cost him all of last season but he beat offensive tackle Corey Robinson easily in two straight one-vs-one reps and then had a nice read on a run play he stopped during an 11-on-11 period. Hyder is searching to regain his 2016 form, where he was a surprise breakout player for Detroit. Lions coach Matt Patricia said what Hyder has been able to do is "outstanding" and that they are monitoring him to keep from potentially doing too much. But Thursday appeared to be a good day for Hyder.
