Detroit Lions - Team Notes

Fourth round pick Da'Shawn Hand started again for the Lions along the defensive line. He's had quite the ascent during training camp and it's the second straight week he's gotten work with the first team. Detroit clearly giving the former No. 1 overall prospect coming out of high school a lot of looks with the first unit.

The Lions offense has been rotating left guards tonight (a spot Frank Ragnow has mostly played this preseason). With T.J. Lang out, the Lions moved Ragnow to right guard (where he's faced Gerald McCoy a bit). They have used three guys at left guard in the first half -- Kenny Wiggins, Joe Dahl and in a surprise, gave Leo Koloamatangi a drive at the end of the first half. Koloamatangi, who was on the team's practice squad last year, has mostly been thought of as a center.

With the preseason likely over for most of Detroit's starters -- there's definitive reason for worry with Detroit's defense. The Lions struggled stopping the run when starters were in and gave up an easy touchdown drive to Tampa Bay's third-string quarterback, Ryan Griffin, before heading to the sidelines. While the pass rush appeared to be a bit better and Ricky Jean Francois looks like a good defensive line signing, the Lions defense looks a long way from a group that can be a good unit a little over two weeks from the opener against the Jets. The offense wasn't much better, with drops from receivers, some questionable blocking and a rushing offense that averaged well below four yards per carry. Detroit has to hope its team improves greatly based on what it has shown in the three-game preseason for starters.
