Lions inactives: DE Ezekiel Ansah, RG T.J. Lang, OT Andrew Donnal, RB Ameer Abdullah, WR Brandon Powell, OL Jamil Demby, TE Hakeem Valles.

Lions without Ezekiel Ansah today gives the team a big hole when it comes to the type of pressure they'll be able to create against San Francisco's offense. Lions, minus Ansah, struggled to get to Sam Darnold last week.
Detroit is going to need LB Devon Kennard -- who had success getting pressure last week -- to replicate that again this week. Also probably need at least one unexpected player to fill in, be it Kerry Hyder or A'Shawn Robinson, who was inactive last week but active this week.

The Lions have been particularly effective in the first half with their larger coverage packages. Detroit has sacked Jimmy Garoppolo four times and at least three of them came not necessarily because of dynamic pass rush pressure, but because of good coverage by the secondary, forcing Garoppolo to hold the ball too long. Marked change from last week here for Detroit.

This was clear improvement for the Lions in the first half against San Francisco. They had drives that moved the ball well -- one a two-minute drill that resulted in a field goal and another that ended in a Kenny Golladay touchdown.
The defense also looked better. While the four sacks Detroit picked up were largely based off coverage, the Lions were getting to Jimmy Garoppolo better than they did Sam Darnold last week. The Lions still look shaky with the run, though -- both on offense and defense. But considering how Detroit looked six days ago, this should be considered improvement.

The Lions defense is now missing their top two players as Darius Slay has been ruled out with a concussion. Detroit was already missing defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, who was inactive with a shoulder injury. With Slay out, the Lions have used Nevin Lawson and Teez Tabor as the team's outside cornerbacks.

It looked like it was headed toward another blowout, but that the Detroit Lions showed signs of life Sunday in a 30-27 loss to San Francisco has to at least be somewhat encouraging for the franchise -- a group that looked in real trouble after the first seven quarters of the season. This was always going to be a tough game for the Lions to win on a short week traveling across the country but Detroit gave itself a shot to win at the end...and that's progress after a 31-point blowout in Week 1. So, at least in theory, the Lions have something to build on heading into Week 3 against New England.
