A good start, but Detroit Lions still need defensive playmakers.

But the fact is that the Lions still need help at every level of defense, and they need to spend the next six months looking for it.

Smart NFL teams will tell you that free agency is for patching holes and the draft is where teams are built, and that's the approach Quinn and the Lions have taken the last two years.
Make sure you have enough of everything to field a team by the time the first week of free agency ends and know that the best signings are the ones that bring the most value beyond their contracts (see: Anquan Boldin a year ago).

It's rare that true difference makers reach free agency, though there were some on the market this year.
And yes, the Denver Broncos won a Super Bowl a few years ago thanks in large part to their free agent additions.
The New York Giants reversed their fortunes last year thanks to some big-ticket signings.
But the best way to lay a solid foundation is by nailing the draft.

New Lions RT Rick Wagner, who officially signed Friday morning, said in a conference call with reporters said his deal is for five years.
He was a player who came into the league as a better run blocker because "we didn't really pass the ball too much" at Wisconsin and credited Baltimore OL coach Juan Castillo with focusing on fundamentals to make him a better pass protector.
He will be expected to help a rushing offense ranked No. 30 in the NFL last season.

New Lions DT Akeem Spence, who signed his contract this morning, said he fits Detroit because of their "style of defense, the way they attack."
He also got a good recommendation from his former college teammate, Tavon Wilson, who is a starting safety in Detroit. Wilson also spoke highly to Spence about Kris Kocurek, Detroit's accomplished defensive line coach.
Spence is going to have a chance to push for a major role with the Lions this year, either as a potential starter or No. 3 DT.

Lions officially announce Cornelius Washington signing. The former Bears DL could be a good edge-setter at defensive end for Detroit as a depth piece.
He has the size to play inside as well, offering position flexibility the Lions like.
For longtime Lions fans, think how Detroit used Jason Jones.

DeAndre Levy's official release comes with a post-June 1 designation.
Per ESPN data, he will count $2.4 million against the cap in 2017 and $4.8 million against in 2018.
This frees up almost $6 million in cap room for the Lions this year.
