In 2017, the Lions reduced Stafford?s base salary from $16.5 million to $1 million. Even after you factor in the $10 million prorated hit for the signing bonus, the extension clears up $5.5 million in cap space this year.

Stafford?s base salaries for the five years of the extension are $9.5 million in 2018, $13.5 million in 2019, $15 million in 2020, $9.5 million in 2021 and $12.5 million in 2022. Only the 2018 base salary is fully guaranteed. 2019 is guaranteed for injury only.

Additionally, Stafford has roster bonuses, due the first week of the new league year, each of the next five seasons. Starting in 2018, they are $6.5 million, $5.5 million, $6 million, $10 million and $10 million. The 2018-20 bonuses are guaranteed only for injury.

Finally, Stafford has a $500,000 workout bonus each of the five seasons.

STAFFORD PUTS THE TEAM ON HIS BACK
Matthew Stafford has 26 game-winning drives over the last five seasons, pacing the league in the stat over that period. The Lions QB worked his magic in eight of the team's nine wins in 2016, the most game-winning drives in a single season since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970.

STAFFORD GETTING BETTER EACH OF LAST THREE SEASONS
Matthew Stafford reached the top 10 in QBR last season and has seen an increase in his efficiency in the last two years. In 2016, the Lions also finished with their best single-season efficiency rank since they were sixth in 2011.

STAFFORD IS A PASSING MACHINE
Matthew Stafford's 278 yards per game in the first eight seasons of his career are the most in NFL history, with Andrew Luck not too far behind. Dan Marino, Kirk Cousins and Kurt Warner round out the list.

Matthew Stafford is the third quarterback in NFL history to get a contract with at least $70 million guaranteed. Those three QBs have combined to win three playoff games in their careers -- and all three games were won by Andrew Luck.
