Detroit Lions - Team Notes

Teryl Austin: "I'm not sure why" the Lions have had so much success against Drew Brees. Have beaten him and the Saints the last three years.

Teryl Austin on Haloti Ngata: "That's a loss that you want to look at." Said A'Shawn Robinson has been "good" as a run defender. Robinson is going to be part of how the Lions replace Ngata in the defensive tackle.

Teryl Austin on his secondary: It's defense. It's not cover and no tackle. It's defense." If guys don't want to be willing tacklers, probably won't be on the field.

Jim Bob Cooter: Any injury questions, ask coach. Obviously referring to Matthew Stafford, who practiced in full yesterday.

Jim Caldwell on how a vet QB like Matthew Stafford deals with injuries: "They work their way through it." Said it isn't just quarterbacks, it's any position. Wouldn't say how he felt he looked Wednesday in practice. Said we can make our own assessments. Based off what I saw yesterday, he looked OK. Practiced fully according to the report.

Jim Caldwell said he doesn't have a least favorite stadium to coach in as a NFL head coach. Considers all of them an honor. Toughest one was the Carrier Dome back in Syracuse in college. Said it's "tough. It's noisy." Said he couldn't hear the guy next to him talk.

Paul Worrilow only Lions player not participating in open practice. Kenny Golladay had a helmet but wasn't doing much during individual drills.

The Lions sport the better record, but ESPN's FPI gives the Saints better than a 2-1 edge at the Superdome on Sunday. In a week of many lopsided projections, this is actually the fifth-closest matchup by FPI's measure.

Lions LT Greg Robinson didn't practice (not injury related). Matthew Stafford practiced fully again.

POD Podcast: First Byte Lions Preview: These aren?t your 2016 New Orleans Saints. 44 minutes.
Bob Rose from Canal Street Chronicles breaks down the Saints prior to Sunday?s game vs. Lions.

This week?s topics
Adrian Peterson was a Saints for four games. What?s up with that?

Bob calls former Lions guard Larry Warford one of the best in the league.
We try to figure out what has gone right with the Saints.

Can Matthew Stafford please not get sacked six times this week?

The Saints defense has played shockingly well over the past two game, have they finally turned the corner into a legit unit?

How have the Saints fared with Brandin Cooks? How big would it be for New Orleans to get Willie Snead back this week?

Just how different is the 2017 Saints from the 2016 Saints that was blown out by Detroit?

Caldwell has no good answer for Lions? OL problems.

Here are some ugly numbers. Through five games, 31 percent of the Lions? runs are being stopped for a loss or no gain. That stuff rate is tied with the Los Angeles Chargers for worst in the league. And the Lions are allowing sacks on 10 percent of their dropbacks, good for 29th in the NFL. Both figures are worse than last year, when the Lions? blocking was already considered below average.

In addition to 18 sacks, quarterback Matthew Stafford has been hurried 42 times and knocked down another 28. Detroit?s linemen have also been flagged for an NFL-worst 12 holding penalties.
