Brian Sakowski of Perfect Game and Tiger's fan gives his thoughts on Tigers draft picks 3 - 10 from Tuesday June 5.
#Tigers Kody Clemens had a monster year. Roger's son, limited to 2B but has a chance to be an impactful offensive one, good hit/power tools, offense over defense type.
Tigers go with Kingston Liniak, prep Cali OF. Bloodlines, projection guy, very good athleticism/speed/power projection type of pick, lots of tools there, raw but significant upside.
Tigers take Adam Wolf, LHP from Louisville to kick off the 5th round. Big dude, tough angle, usually in the 88-92 mph range, can really pitch, show an average curveball and changeup, little cutter there too, pitchability type with some upside, backend starter upside.
Tigers swing for the fences with upside in round 6. 6'10" RHP Hugh Smith from Whitworth College (DIII), up to 96-97 mph this year, body still projects, shows solid slider and changeup, legitimate upside guy, went from 6-1 to 6-10 in 3 years of college. Like that a lot for DET.
Tigers going #JuCoRoute in round 7, with another legitimate upside pick in Eric De La Rosa, OF from Grossmont College. Athletic, toolsy, projectable guy, more raw for a 3rd year JC guy, but has power from the right side with arm strength and speed. RF likely, power is the draw.
Tigers kick off the 8th round with Jeremiah Burks from Fresno State. Twitchy athletic middle infielder, announced as a 2B, great body, some versatility, some pop there, lots of swing-and-miss, versatile org type.
Tigers aren?t messing around in this draft. Take big lefty Tarik Skubal from Seattle University. Medical history and inconsistencies of command, but real arm strength, been into mid-90?s.
Tigers close out Day 2 with NC State OF Brock Deatherage. Toolsy, athletic college OF, plus speed, chance for plus CF defense, has some pop, serious hit tool concerns, but hit tool clicks, he?s a major leaguer. Again...upside for the Tigers here.
