TMLR Toolshed: Best Control.
Welcome to the TMLR Toolshed series, where we take an annual look at the standout tools in Detroit?s system. In today?s article we?re looking at which pitchers in the organization show the best control. See also: Hitting, Power, Speed, Defense, Arm, SP Fastball, RP Fastball, Breaking Ball, Changeup
This post is going to feature less video than the others, because control is best judged in the aggregate, and splicing together 250 pitches from three different starts isn?t a great use of anyone?s time. We?re focusing specifically on control here, but we?ll address command in each capsule. For those who might be confused, control is the ability to throw strikes, while command is the ability to locate balls to specific spots.
And one quick note. We?ve added an extra column on the tables for percentage of strikes thrown (Str%) last year. For reference, the MLB average for Str% in 2019 was 64.9%, with the very best pitchers nearing 70%, and the worst under 59%. Without further delay, here are the best strike throwers in the system.
