Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Since they were off yesterday, both the Tigers and the Mariners will be wearing #42 tonight in honor of Jackie Robinson.

Miguel Cabrera Has Chance To Make More History.
Miguel Cabrera has established himself as one of the premiere players in the game, and he can build on his impressive resume this year.
The American League MVP of 2012, Cabrera has won back-to-back batting titles. Type of hitter he is, he certainly could do it again. Big deal? Real big.
A righthanded hitter has not won three consecutive batting titles since Rogers Hornsby of the Cardinals won six in a row from 1920-25.

Since then, six righthanded hitters, other than Cabrera, have won two in a row: Nomar Garciaparra of the Red Sox (1999-2000), Bill Madlock of the Cubs (1975-76), Roberto Clemente of the Pirates (1964-65), Tommy Davis of the Dodgers (1962-63), Joe DiMaggio of the Yankees (1939-40) and Al Simmons of the Philadelphia A?s (1930-31).

Cabrera, who has finished in top five in AL MVP voting each of last four years, has put to rest the initial fears that Comerica Park wasn?t conducive to offensive numbers. He has hit .323 with 183 home runs in his five years with the Tigers.

Valverde to pitch in extended spring game tomorrow. If all goes well, plan is for him to pitch for Class A Lakeland Friday and Saturday.
No set plans after that. Dave Dombrowski said he could stay in Lakeland a little while because weather up north has been so iffy.
Also, Dombrowski said Valverde opt out is May 8, not May 5 as previously reported.

April 17 in Tigers and mlb history:

1820 - Alexander Cartwright, considered by many the father of the national pastime, is born in New York City. This pioneer banker, who is given credit for establishing three strikes for an out and three outs for each half inning, will be elected into the Hall of Fame in 1938 after a review of his journals reveals his many contributions in developing and promoting the sport of baseball.

1914 - The Chicago White Sox purchased Ray Demmitt from the Detroit Tigers for $2,500.

1939 - On the morning of Opening Day in Washington, DC, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New York Yankees visit Abner Doubleday's grave at Arlington National Cemetery. Roosevelt is also scheduled to throw out the first pitch at Griffith Stadium, but the game is rained out and Vice President John Nance Garner will do the honors four days later.

1945 - Pete Gray, a one-armed outfielder, plays his major league debut game with the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman's Park. Gray hits a single off Les Mueller in four at-bats, and handles no chances in the outfield. St. Louis beats the Detroit Tigers, 7 - 1, for their ninth straight Opening Day win, setting a major league record that the 1975-1983 New York Mets will tie. Gray, one of many players recruited to perform during World War II, will hit .218 (51 for 254) in his only major league season.

1953 - New York Yankees outfielder Mickey Mantle clears the bleachers at Griffith Stadium with a 565-foot home run off Chuck Stobbs. The shot comes in the 5th inning of a 7 - 3 Yankees victory over the Washington Senators. It is believed to be the longest home run in Griffith Stadium history.

1955: At Forbes Field, the Pittsburgh Pirates' 20-year-old rookie Roberto Clemente makes his major league debut, playing both ends of a doubleheader, ironically but perhaps fittingly, against the Brooklyn Dodgers, the team that first signed him but left him unprotected in the Rule V draft. In his first at-bat, the future Hall of Famer rifles one back through the originator, Johnny Podres, and off the glove of shortstop Pee Wee Reese, for the first of his 3,000 career hits.

1955: Al Kaline of the Detroit Tigers hits three home runs in Briggs Stadium, including a pair in the 6th inning, to drive in six runs. The Tigers rout the A's, 16 - 0 behind Steve Gromek's strong pitching. Kaline becomes the first Tigers player to hit two homeruns in the same inning, a feat that will be also done by Magglio Ordonez. For Kaline's 1955 season, the 20 year old will lead the league in batting average .340 hits with 200 and total bases with 321, and finish second in the MVP vote to Yogi Berra.

1956: Three future Hall of Fame members make their major league debuts. Luis Aparicio of the Chicago White Sox, Don Drysdale of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Redlegs play the first games of their brilliant careers.

1960 - Cleveland Indians general manager Frank Lane, notorious for his multiple transactions, sends American League home run king, Rocky Colavito, to the Detroit Tigers for the league's defending batting champion, Harvey Kuenn. The trade is especially unpopular with Indians fans, who regard Colavito as their most popular player and best hitter.

1993: The Detroit Tigers score 20 runs in a game for the second time this week, beating the Seattle Mariners, 20 - 3. Rob Deer is 1 for 2 and scores four runs, while Travis Fryman has four hits and scores five times. Chad Kreuter adds four hits and three runs and Gary Thurman paces the Tigers with four RBI.

1995 - The Detroit Tigers signed Juan Samuel as a free agent.

2006: Detroit's Chris Shelton and St. Louis' Albert Pujols hit their major league-leading ninth home runs, joining Mike Schmidt (1976), Larry Walker (1997) and Luis Gonzalez (2001) as the only players in major league history with at least nine home runs in their team's first 13 games.

After Boston Marathon tragedy, baseball doesn't seem so important.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland: Boston bombings put game in context.
from the detnews

Leyland keeps perspective after Boston tragedy.
Like so many people around baseball, Tigers manager Jim Leyland saw the news reports of the tragedy at the Boston Marathon and was heartbroken. Like many, too, he said it makes the day-to-day issues around baseball seem trivial.
"It puts somebody getting on the manager about the lineup card, worrying about who you bring in as a relief pitcher, it kind of puts it all in perspective," Leyland said Tuesday. "I was sitting there thinking about that today.
"Here we are, playing this game. There's the good, the bad, the ugly, and all this stuff goes on, and it's your job and it's a very serious thing. But in reality, when you see what happened to that one family in particular, that's just gut-wrenching and heartbreaking, and this doesn't seem so important. It blows my mind what happened to that one poor family."
Leyland was referring to the family of 8-year-old Martin Richard, one of those killed by the explosions near the marathon's finish line in downtown Boston.
"It just breaks your heart, a bunch of innocent people having a good time," Leyland continued. "Some things, I guess you're just not supposed to understand."

Jose Valverde will face batters today in Tigers comeback bid.
from the detnews

Valverde staying in Florida to work on comeback.
Jose Valverde's road potentially back to Detroit is going to keep him in Lakeland, Fla., a little while longer. It sounds like he'll be in the Minors longer than that.
Tigers president/general manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed the club's immediate plan for Valverde and the thought process going forward. Valverde's next outing will be Wednesday in an extended spring game. If all goes well, the plan is for Valverde to pitch Friday and Saturday for the Class A team in Lakeland.
No plans are set from there. Part of it depends on how Valverde pitches, but part of it also depends on the weather around the Midwest.
"It's a decision for us to make sure he continues to work," Dombrowski said during pregame batting practice Tuesday at Safeco Field. "He's doing fine. His progress has been fine. We just continue to analyze, and we've worked with him too, wanting to make sure where his comfort zone is."
Asked if Valverde needs to pitch at a higher level in the Minors before the Tigers make a decision, Dombrowski said, "Higher level than extended [spring workouts], yes. We're going to put him in A-ball for sure. But we have until May 8 to make a decision, so I would think at some point, [yes].
"At this point, we're not just going to leave him in Lakeland and make a decision. Our plans would be to move him up, but the weather has been so bad. We don't want him to go and join the Toledo club and all of a sudden be sitting there for three or four days in a shortened time period and not pitching because of the weather."
The May 8 date, it turns out, is the day Valverde can exercise the opt-out clause in his Minor League contract if he's not in the Majors by then. It was originally May 5 but was pushed back when visa issues delayed Valverde's arrival to Tigers extended spring camp.

Detroit Tigers' Octavio Dotel available to pitch after missing two games with elbow soreness.
from Mlive

Dotel rejoins Tigers bullpen after elbow scare.
Octavio Dotel is back in the Tigers bullpen after sitting out the weekend games in Oakland with elbow soreness.
"He's ready to pitch," manager Jim Leyland said after Tuesday's win over the Mariners. "I'll be getting him in there soon."
A pregame throwing session went well enough that Dotel was available Tuesday night. Leyland opted to give him another day to rest, going to Al Alburquerque for the eighth inning with a 6-2 lead. With just six outs for the bullpen to cover after Doug Fister's strong outing, and Rick Porcello available out of the bullpen Tuesday, Leyland could afford to give Dotel the night off.
At this point, simply avoiding a stint on the disabled list with Dotel is a major relief for the Tigers, as they go into the late innings with a bullpen by committee.
Dotel hasn't pitched since Friday's West Coast trip opener in Oakland, when he retired two batters on just five pitches in the ninth inning and didn't return for the 10th.
Dotel's return comes as Porcello returns to the rotation. He'll begin preparing Wednesday for his next scheduled start this weekend against the Angels.

Quick hits
The Tigers were off on Monday, so they celebrated Jackie Robinson Day by wearing No. 42 for Tuesday's game against the Mariners.

Tigers outfielder and former Mariner Matt Tuiasosopo returned to Safeco Field for the first time since Seattle released him in September 2011. Tuiasosopo grew up in the Seattle area, so it was a homecoming on multiple levels. He took teammates to a favorite restaurant downtown on Monday's off-day after visiting family, including his brother, former NFL quarterback and current University of Washington quarterbacks coach Marques Tuiasosopo.

Tigers catching prospect James McCann completed a four-hit game Tuesday by driving in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning in Double-A Erie's 9-6 win at Bowie. McCann has four multi-hit performances in his first 10 games, pushing his average on the season to .317.
