Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Tigers use Home Run power to beat O's 10-6 splitting 4 gameseries. Four HRs: 3-run HRs from Martinez and Kelly, Cabrera 2-run HR, Peralta solo HR.

Tigers took early lead on Cabrera 2-run HR in 1st...had 3-0 lead in 5th when O's tied it off Penny...Tigers took 6-3 on Martinez HR bot 6th.

3RBI give Martinez 101...his 4th 100RBI season. Kelly 3-run HR made it 9-3....after Reimold HR off Pauley made it 9-6, Peralta hit solo HR

Kelly now with 3HR, 2 doubles and triple and 11RBI last 45AB...Peralta HR gives him 20 for 4th time...SS hitting .300+ with 20HR-80RBI - not bad.

Alburquerque worked 3rd game in last four...first time back to back games in two months...2.2IP in the three games, 4K, 1H and 0 BB.

Benoit got final out of 8th - since early August, he's allowed no runs in 21IP, 5 hits, 7BB/25K. Valverde worked scorless 9th - but no save.

Win was Tigers 92nd of year...keeping heat on Rangers, who are winning at home vs. Seattle in the 6th....Tigers are 1GB Texas.

Cabrera's two hits put his avg. at .341 - he now leads the AL batting race over Gonzalez and Young. Cabrera has hit .440 last 29 Games, 6HR/22RBI.

Cabrera left game with "light-headedness"...no further word, but didn't appear to be serious, since he lined out right before leaving game.

Detroit Tigers Team Notes

1908: Detroit's Wild Bill Donovan stops the A's, 3-2, while the White Sox are trouncing the Highlanders, 12-0. The A's scores end their ML-record streak of 48 innings without a run.

1926: In his final day in a Tiger uniform, Ty Cobb watches his replacement in centerfield gets six hits in a twin bill with the Red Sox to become the new batting champs as Heinie Manush edges Babe Ruth .378 to .372 for the title.

1967 - Cleveland's Luis Tiant beats the Red Sox 6 - 3. The Twins top the Angels 7 - 3 behind two monster home runs by Harmon Killebrew, his 42nd and 43rd of the season. Mickey Lolich blanks the Yanks, 1 - 0, for Detroit to tighten the pennant race. The Twins (91 - 68) lead with Chicago (89 - 68) and the idle Red Sox (90 - 69) a game back, and Detroit (89 - 69) one 1/2 back.
