Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Tigers struggling to keep teams from stealing bases.
DETROIT -- The Tigers have thrown out only 19 percent of potential basestealers, the lowest mark in the American League. In fact, opposing teams have successfully stolen 17 straight bases against Detroit, with only one runner picked off in that span.

Manager Jim Leyland said there are several reasons behind that problem, including pitchers not doing a good enough job holding runners close to first base.

"We're trying to get guys to vary their times," Leyland said. "Hold the ball a little bit more. But sometimes guys just can't get under 1.4, 1.5 [seconds in their delivery]. If they go home and the guy goes at the right time, they're going to beat it."

The Royals, who lead the Major Leagues with 115 stolen bases entering Tuesday, swiped nine bags in a recent five-game series against Detroit. The Tigers have surrendered 105 stolen bases this season, which is tied for the second-highest total in the Majors. The Red Sox have allowed 110, while the Angels also have given up 105.

Ultimately, it's a balancing act for teams to weigh how much focus they want their pitchers to have on baserunners versus the hitters at the plate. The Tigers give signs for their pickoff moves, so pitchers don't have to split their concentration between the two.

"They all are capable [of holding runners better]. I think a lot of it's a mental thing," Leyland said. "It's hard to break habits. In college, a lot of times it didn't matter because they struck the next three guys out. Up here, it becomes a little different."

August 28 in Tigers and mlb history:

1921: Despite three doubles by Babe Ruth, the Tigers drop the Yankees 7 - 3. Ruth starts a record streak in which he gets at least one extra-base hit in nine straight games. Tigers stars of the game are CF Ty Cobb, LF Bobby Veach, and P Bert Cole.

1961: At Washington, Rocky Colavito and Al Kaline belt 1st-inning homers as Detroit wins 7 - 3 to cut New York's lead to 1 1/2 games. Rocky now has 39 homers and 120 RBIs. Jake Wood hits a 6th inning grand slam to complete the scoring for Detroit.

1969: Detroit OF Jim Northrup goes 6 for 6, as the Tigers beat the A's 5 - 3. Northrup's 6th hit is a home run over the roof in the bottom of the 13th to win the game. The first 6-hit game for Detroit since June 24 1962, when the Tigers hitter with a 6 hit game was Rocky Colavito with seven hits in a 22 inning marathon.

2000: The Players' association exercises its option to extend the Collective bargaining agreement, ensuring labor peace through October 31, 2001. The expected move comes as no surprise as the players appear to be happy with the November 1996 deal, but the owners have expressed concerns the present CBA has widened the talent gap between the high and low-revenue markets due to escalating salaries.

Athletics 6 - Tigers 3 (5-1/2 inn.) ?Somehow, you don?t expect rain-shortened games in the midst of a pennant race. Justin Verlander couldn?t finish batters (sound familiar?), throwing 104 pitches in 5 innings while touched for 5 runs. His 44-pitch first inning featured 9 swinging strikes, but also 12 fouls (half after 2 strikes) and 4 batters who wound up on base after 2 strikes, creating 2 runs. He breezed through the 2nd and into the 3rd, but with 2 outs he couldn?t put down Brandon Moss from 1-and-2 (two fouls and a walk), and Yoenis Cespedes doubled on 0-and-2 to tie the game.

Detroit had slipped ahead in the home 1st with Prince Fielder?s 2-run single (after Tommy Milone walked 2 to load the bases) and Alberto Callaspo?s 2-out error. Brandon Moss?s 22nd HR broke the tie with 2 outs in the 5th, after Omar Infante?s error. Verlander had 0-2 or 1-2 on the first three men that inning, but fanned none; he threw 68 strikes in all to 23 batters, but finished his night with just 3 Ks. Oakland had the bases full and no outs against Bruce Rondon when the tarp rolled out.
?Verlander had won his last 6 starts against the A?s, counting two 11-K clampdowns in last year?s playoffs.
?A recent SweetSpot guest suggested that Verlander still should start the playoff opener. With due respect to Justin, what games has that scribe been watching? Detroit is 13-14 in Verlander?s starts. If Justin had a stellar postseason record, I could see it, but he?s had October ups & downs. Leyland might start JV first, but it won?t be the logical choice.
