Tigers don't go with reigning Cy Young winner on Opening Day, but that's hardly a first.

Anibal Sanchez misses start with shoulder soreness; Tigers not worried.
from the detnews

Anibal scratched with right shoulder inflammation.
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The shoulder issues that have bothered Anibal Sanchez off and on during his career flared up again Monday, albeit on what is believed to be a minor basis. The Tigers right-handed starter and reigning American League ERA champion was scratched from his scheduled start with right posterior shoulder inflammation.
Sanchez was scratched about 35 minutes before game time on a rainy Monday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium. What was initially thought to be a weather-related decision turned out to be injury-related.
"Basically Anibal came in this morning, had some posterior shoulder inflammation, some soreness," Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said, "so we opted to skip his start, start treating him for that and getting him ready for his next start."
If the rotation stays on its current schedule, Sanchez's next scheduled start would come Saturday against the Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla.
Sanchez missed time last year with a right shoulder strain. He missed over two weeks from June 16 to July 5, then pitched without issues for the rest of the season, including the playoffs.
Sanchez suffered a right labrum tear in 2007 that cost him a full season of action. He also missed three months in 2009 with a right shoulder sprain.
In this case, however, the impression seems to be more routine.
"It's very common for pitchers in Spring Training to go through a little bit of inflammation," Rand said. "And so, when he came in with it today, it was smarter to skip his start and get him ready for the next one."

Davis removed from lineup with sore hamstring.
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Considering Rajai Davis swiped his fifth base of the spring Sunday, and his third in five games, his sore right hamstring doesn't seem to be limiting him. Still, it was enough of a concern on a wet Monday afternoon that he was scratched from the Tigers' starting lineup.

Davis said Monday the hamstring has been bothering him for a few days, but that it was nothing serious. He could have played if needed, but the Tigers decided to use extra precaution.

"It was my call," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He said he could play. I just decided that I'd rather have him out of there and come back [Tuesday], see how he is."

The Tigers have a split-squad day Tuesday, sending a team to Port St. Lucie, Fla., to face the Mets while another Tigers squad hosts the Blue Jays at Joker Marchant Stadium. Davis was not on Tuesday's travel squad when the list was posted Monday morning, and he surely won't be now.

Even without the rains that eventually washed out the game between the Tigers and Nationals, Ausmus said he probably would've taken Davis out of the lineup. The weather simply gave him an easier excuse if he wanted it.

"He's been doing a lot of running. I mean, he's been playing a lot, running the bases," head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said. "He's been doing quite a bit here this spring."

March 18 in Tigers and mlb history:

1942 - Two black players, Jackie Robinson and Nate Moreland, request a tryout with the Chicago White Sox during spring training in Pasadena, California. Sox manager Jimmie Dykes allows the two to work out but later dismisses them. Robinson will have to wait five years before making his major league debut.

1985 - Commissioner Peter Ueberroth reinstates Hall of Fame members Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, who had been banned from association with organized baseball by former commissioner Bowie Kuhn due to their employment by Atlantic City casinos. Ueberroth's ruling will allow both men to pursue employment with major league teams.

1990 - Major league players and owners reach a new collective bargaining agreement that will end the 32-day lockout of spring training camps. Highlights of the deal include increasing the clubs' contributions to the players' pension fund, raising the major league minimum salary to $100,000, and a compromise on salary arbitration that leaves 17 percent of players with between two and three years of major league experience eligible.
