Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Tigers would love to improve at 2B (right now, it's Raburn/Santiago) or 3B (Inge/Kelly), but no obvious fits out there.

Are Detroit Tigers the mystery team talking with shortstop Jimmy Rollins?
from Mlive

At the end of the day, even if the Tigers are the team talking with Rollins' agent, it's probably a leverage play to get a few more dollars out of the Phillies.
Rollins should represent a significantly lower investment, in years and dollars, than the younger and more talented Jose Reyes, who signed a 6-year deal with the Miami Marlins worth $106 million. But it has been reported that Rollins is seeking a five-year deal.
If it requires that long of a commitment to bring the shortstop to Detroit, general manager Dave Dombrowski would be wise to pass.

December 14 in Tigers and mlb history :

1922: In a joint meeting of the two leagues, the ban on non-waiver trades after June 15 is approved. The National League favors a 50-player limit until June 15, the American League votes for 40. Judge Landis breaks the deadlock in favor of 40. Compensation of World Series umpires is changed from a percentage of the players' pool to a flat $2,000.

1922: Still smarting over the rejection of the official scorer's decision in the Ty Cobb case, the national baseball writers' group meets and votes to back the New York group's protest. Fred Lieb, who had filled in the Associated Press box score giving Cobb the disputed hit, asks Ban Johnson to revise the records to .399 for Cobb. Johnson complains of not receiving box scores from some writers, who are appointed by the clubs as official scorers.

1932: Washington gets Earl Whitehill from the Detroit Tigers for Firpo Marberry and Carl Fischer.

1933: Goose Goslin of the Washington Senators is sent to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for John Stone.

1938 - Major league teams adopt several resolutions. The National League allows the Cincinnati Reds to play their season opener one day before other teams, as a way of honoring the 100th anniversary of baseball and of the 1869 Red Stockings being the first professional team. In other news, Will Harridge is re-elected as American League president and given a 10-year term. The AL permits the Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Athletics to play night games. Finally, the major leagues agree on a standard ball but disagree on increasing rosters from 23 to 25 players. Judge Landis will eventually decide on 25.

1953 - Detroit Tigers shortstop Harvey Kuenn, who hit .308 for the season, is voted American League Rookie of the Year.

Doug Fister, The Man Rick Porcello Should Aspire To Be.
from blessyouboystigersblog

It really seems to me like Fister has more movement on his pitches, but I do agree with the author that Porcello needs to mix up his pitches better. That annoys me every time I watch him pitch.

TIGERFEST POSTPONED UNTIL 2013;
CARAVAN SET FOR JANUARY 19 & 20

Dear Tigers Fans:

We wanted to make you aware that Tigerfest has been postponed until 2013 because of renovations at Comerica Park. Please know these renovations have made the ballpark unavailable due to space limitations and safety reasons. Although alternative sites were considered, we strongly feel the best Tigerfest experience is at Comerica Park.

As we get closer to the start of the 2012 season, we will share the details on the enhancements to Comerica Park, including upgrades to the scoreboard in left field.

We do apologize for any inconvenience but promise that Tigerfest will be back at Comerica Park in 2013.

Mark your calendars now, as the tradition of the Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan, presented by Verizon Wireless and FOX Sports Detroit, is set for Thursday, January 19 and Friday, January 20, with an exciting lineup of appearances throughout the state of Michigan. Tigers' players, coaches, front office personnel, and Detroit's favorite mascot PAWS, will take part in a two-day journey traveling by bus across the region, spreading baseball fever to fans of all ages.

Destinations for the winter caravan will be announced in January.
