Detroit Tigers Team Notes

January 11 in Tigers and mlb history :

1958 - US Representatives Kenneth Keating and Patrick Hillings drop their plan to bring baseball under the nation's antitrust laws.

1971 - 27-year-old Detroit Tigers reliever John Hiller suffers chest pains that doctors will later diagnose as a heart attack. Hiller will miss the entire 1971 season but will make an incredible comeback in 1973, saving a then major league record 38 games.

1973: Major League owners approve one of the game's most controversial rules: the designated hitter. The owners decide to allow American League teams to implement the rule on an experimental three-year basis, but the rule will become a permanent addition to the AL while the National League never adopts it.

2011: The Tigers sign P Brad Penny to a one-year contract. A back injury ended his last season prematurely after he had pitched well for the Cardinals in the early going.

WAAS: Wins Above All-Star Level.
from High Heat Stats

In two recent columns (insider), ESPN's Peter Keating proposes evaluating HOF candidates with a WAR-based stat he calls Wins Above All-Star level, or WAAS. In a nutshell:
Season WAAS = WAR minus 2.5, except that...
Season WAAS cannot be less than 0.
Career WAAS = sum of season WAAS.
Threshold for HOF consideration is about 20 WAAS.

In Keating's words:

"t's quite possible to pile up [career] WAR without having superstar seasons. ... Wins Above All-Star Level is my way of rewarding greatness, rather than mere longevity. Players having marginal All-Star years average about 2.5 WAR. WAAS simply looks at a player's WAR, year by year, subtracts 2.5 from each season and adds up the total. Any season whose adjusted WAR is negative is thrown out, since WAAS measures a player's peak performance. The results speak for themselves.

List calculated the top WAAS values (based on B-R WAR) among position players who have appeared on a HOF ballot but have not yet been elected.
Non-HOF Batters with at least 20 WAAS:
(Only HOF-eligibles with at least 1 year on the ballot).

Also integrated the players from the first list into the list of HOFers.
HOFers plus Eligibles with at least 20 WAAS:

What to watch today: Justin Verlander on 'Conan'.
The last time Justin Verlander made an appearance on TBS, he was beating the Yankees in the playoffs. Tonight, the Tigers ace moves out of his comfort zone to appear on "Conan" to plug the MLB 2K12 video game (he's the cover boy). Actually, it's out of Conan O'Brien's comfort zone, too. He's not a big sports guy. 11, TBS.
