Morosi says Damon is a "stronger possibility" for the Tigers than Derrek Lee, who has also been mentioned as an option. Damon, who batted .271/.355/.401 with eight homers and 11 steals in 2010 for Detroit, would be able to help out in the DH slot with the loss of Victor Martinez and also can play some left field should the Tigers choose to use Delmon Young as a DH, as well.

To replace Victor Martinez, the Tigers have discussed adding a speedster to the top of the lineup, such as Johnny Damon or Juan Pierre.
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com confirmed Detroit's interest in Damon on Sunday. Damon batted .271/.355/.401 with eight homers and 11 steals in 2010 for Detroit. He would play some DH and also can play some left field should the Tigers choose to use Delmon Young as a DH. Pierre, of course, is a superior defender to both. He was not offered arbitration by the White Sox in November after batting .279/.329/.327 with two homers, 50 RBI and a .657 OPS over 711 plate appearances. The 34-year-old just finished a ridiculous five-year, $44 million contract and won't get anything close to that. A meager one-year offer should get him, however.

1927 - In the continuing clash between Commissioner Kenesaw Landis and American League President Ban Johnson, the AL owners are prepared to censure Johnson. But his serious health problems convince them to change their stance and Johnson is given an indefinite leave of absence instead. Tigers President Frank Navin takes over control of the league on an interim basis and the owners adopt a resolution repudiating the charges that Johnson made against Landis.

The Cubs, Marlins and Tigers are the three teams most actively targeting Yoenis Cespedes, reports FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal (Twitter link). Last week, Cespedes said the Cubs were his most ardent suitor, with the Marlins, Tigers, Orioles, White Sox and Indians also showing "more interest" in him.

January 24 in Tigers and mlb history :

1913 - In a story in the New York Times, Detroit Tigers President Frank Navin blames the length of the games on the coaches' boxes. Navin, reacting to American League President Ban Johnson's complaint that too many games the previous season had taken two hours to play, says the boxes should be moved back so that the catcher can give the pitcher his signals more quickly. From where they are now, he said, the coaching players can detect the catcher's signals unless he takes a lot of time to hide them. Navin said this slow signalling is the reason for the longer games.

1955 - In an effort to speed up the game, Major League Baseball announces a new rule which requires a pitcher to deliver the ball within 20 seconds after taking a pitching position.

2001 - In what is believed to be an historical first, sixty-eight major league umpires participate in a pre-season session to practice calling strikes as defined by the rule book. With the help of minor league players wearing tapes nine inches above their belts, the men in blue get a good look at pitches, normally called balls, which now will considered a strike as the correct interpretation of the zone will be enforced this upcoming season.

2011: The Tigers trade P Armando Galarraga, who lost a perfect game due to umpire Mike Joyce's blown call on June 2, to the Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league Ps Ryan Robowski and Kevin Eichhorn.
