Yet, reality is the Tigers couldn?t afford to let Scherzer and Porcello go while making one bad decision after another signing players to awful contracts.

Don?t think the math adds up? Well, when you total the contracts of Anibal Sanchez ($16.8 million), Victor Martinez ($13.1 million), Justin Upton ($22.1 million) and Jordan Zimmermann ($18 million) for the 2016 season it is equals $70 million.

Collectively, those four players had a WAR (Wins Above Replacement, baseball-reference.com version) of 2.7.

Conversely, Scherzer ($22.1 million) and Porcello ($20.2 million) were paid just over $42 million for the 2016 season. Their combined WAR: 11.2.

A simple explanation: The Tigers paid $28 million more for nearly nine less wins.

The Tigers have been guilty of bad money management, poor player evaluation and being struck in an analog world during the digital age.
They have not been playing the game by the new established rules.

Why can?t the Tigers be ahead of the curve, rather than the last ones to adopt something that statistically should work?
Why not make the game fit the team?
It shouldn?t be a novel idea to use people and their skill sets in the best way possible, rather than trying to get them to fit into a pre-determined role that has proved to be ineffective time and time again.

November 24 in Tigers and mlb history:

1953 - The Brooklyn Dodgers sign the relatively unknown Walter Alston to a one-year pact as their manager for next season. Alston, who had served as the skipper of the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate in Montreal, replaces Chuck Dressen after Pee Wee Reese turns down the job. Alston will manage the Dodgers in Brooklyn and Los Angeles over the next 23 seasons, winning 2,040 games and four World Championships.

1977 - Former major league manager Mayo Smith dies at the age of 62. Smith skippered the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers during a nine-year managerial career, but gained most of his fame when he guided the Tigers to the 1968 World Championship.

1982 - Cal Ripken, Jr., who hit .264 with 28 home runs as a shortstop and third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles, is named American League Rookie of the Year. His consecutive games played streak is in its infancy at 118 games.
